Aren't they talking about making gen5 drives wider? I read a few articles talking about how they might be 2580 instead of 2280. Would they even fit then in current M.2 slots?
I wonder who is gonna be the first to release a gen5 NVMe HBA or when we could realistically expect to see one. 2023? 2024? I'm guessing the biggest issue is gonna be the heat dissipation.
I'd say it depends on the TBW (Terabytes written) of the model of SSD that you are using. Even low end SSDs tend to have TBW in the hundreds and if you are only using this for standard consumer usage your drive could be good for many years. Like everyone else has been saying, back ups are king...
If they end up changing the width its gonna take even longer for gen5 to catch on imo. Like gen4 has been around for a few years now and I feel it hasn't even become mainstream, if you look at most companies their computers are all gen3 still.
