Question SSD buying guide, like the old anandtech buying guides

I just made one quick on my subreddit after seeing your post.

Question Crystal Disk Info - Accurate?

Percentage used = 6Ah = 106%. I don't think this is accurate. The BC501 doesn't have a set TBW as far as I know, but ~20TB of host writes even with high write amplification isn't close to that flash's endurance. Which makes sense as available spare is still 64h = 100%.

    Question WD PC SN820

    SN820 is an OEM SN850X.

Question How to query Nvme Host Memory Buffer stats?

Some of the early HMB drives were wonky and there are other outliers. The WD SN500, for example, comes with HMB disabled, but then it appears in the latter SN550. You can test the SN550 both ways to see it doesn't make much difference on that line of drives in everyday use. Newer DRAM-less NVMe...

Question How to query Nvme Host Memory Buffer stats?

There's tools to find this. VLO's nvme-hmb on Windows, nvme-cli (nvme get-feature) on Linux. Also can be recorded (and modified) in Windows. Limit on HMB size depends on the drive, by NVMe spec with normal granularity it's up to about 1GB:1TB. As per the article it's normally 64MB or less. You...

    Question SSD Sequential Write Testing

FIO. Tom's Hardware uses IOMeter. CrystalDiskMark is based on Microsoft's DiskSpd which you can get and run through a CLI. I wouldn't trust HD Tune or AIDA64, myself.

Question SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB SSD Write speed dropped by half

Looks like it's stuck in TLC. It's not using the SLC cache for writes. Happens sometimes. Usually I recommend a wipe (sanitize or "secure erase" in some places) to restore operation.

    Question Transcend SSD225S, NAND, Controller?

Hmm. The drive was announced as being DRAM-less and Transcend usually uses SMI controllers so I would guess the SM2259XT. They also often use Micron flash, specifically TLC, which lines up with the DWPD (0.3). The performance at 250GB is 330 MB/s for sequential writes (CDM) which implies fewer...

Question  Samsung 970 Evo Plus vs. Seagate FireCuda 520 but both in Intel PCIe 3.0 slot?

At 2TB, the Elpis + 128L TLC would likely be superior to the original. This is because the original always had denser dies at 2TB. I'd actually argue the change is a side grade at worse with lower capacities. I could write a lot on this, but you should hit me up on my subreddit or my discord for...

    Question SSD NVMe flash types

I have a list of Prime Day sales/deals for SSDs on my subreddit if you're looking. I just added two more. At 2TB for Gen4, yes the P41 is sold out now, the next best is the WD SN850, then ADATA Premium, Samsung 980 Pro, and Crucial P5 Plus, all between $179.99 and $189.99 (2TB 980 Pro is $184.99...

    Question SSD NVMe flash types

I cover these topics extensively on my subreddit and discord; just search my name. I have a section entitled "SSD Basics" that covers the technical aspects, albeit imperfectly. Hynix is actually one of the better brands. Good OEM drives, and their P31 & P41 drives are excellent. You mostly...

Question Thermal throttling in Silicon Power P34A80 NVMe SSD and strange SMART status.

Original E12s used BiCS3, that is correct, if your drive only had two NAND packages on the top side then it's the old layout.

Question Thermal throttling in Silicon Power P34A80 NVMe SSD and strange SMART status.

Yeah that sounds like a serious issue...although I've heard "it's not compatible" from many support people on laptops. So that's unfortunate. I'm not aware of people downgrading firmware on that controller, it's not something that's done terribly often, not to say it's impossible but I wouldn't...

Question Thermal throttling in Silicon Power P34A80 NVMe SSD and strange SMART status.

There were WHEA errors with NVMe drives after X570 came out, actually, although not as serious as that. It's rare to get disk errors on SSDs actually...that sounds like a hardware issue, although cannot be sure it's the drive alone without trying a different one.

Question Thermal throttling in Silicon Power P34A80 NVMe SSD and strange SMART status.

Right, I was just giving an example. Yeah, you may have to measure.
