Upgrading to 24GB of RAM....

24 GBs sounds a bit extreme to me, but then again I probably have different usage patterns than the OP. Might I suggest the OP run some perf counters to see if RAM is really bottlenecking his system? As other's have indicated, some RAM may be caching data which will be evicted if another...

SSD AHCI quick question

IIRC, you should be able to switch on Win 7 and newer versions. XP (and possible Vista) did not ship with AHCI drivers, which would result in an unbootable OS if you switched the controller to AHCI without first installing the ACHI drivers. Win 7/8 *should* automatically detect the new...

Best 4x Space Game?

You might consider giving AI War a look if you haven't. From my brief playing (few hours on tutorials), it's basically sort of a mix mash of Sins of a Solar Empire and Gal Civ II, minus factions/diplomacy, but with a more novel AI opponent. Also on sale on steam for ~2.75ish.

Looking to reduce compile time.

You don't mention what OS your tool chain is on? If you're on Windows, double check that your build directories are excluded from your anti-virus scanning - when I was working on firmware at Intel, adding our build directory to the AV exclusion list gained us about 20-30% performance boost...

Too true. $2000 should set you up with a very nice setup - I'm a bit jealous. But, then again, I don't think I have anything that I play or do professionally that would benefit all that much from such an awesome computer.

Heh, just saw your other thread. While it does suck that it died, 1 failure does not make an entire product line "unreliable". If you have examples of a lot of others with similar experiences, then you might have a good case against a particular drives reliability.

Sigh Intel 320 160 gig dies 2x in a week (8MB bug)

Just to be clear - is this a single drive that's failed on you 3 times, or is it several drives that have failed on you. If you've seen more than 1 failure, definitely RMA it. Bad parts do occassionally make it past QA, and it isn't worth your time to keep fighting a likely defective part...

No drives are 100% reliable. It sucks that Anonemous's drive died, but that's mostly annecdotal evidence (bad drives do occasionally ship). I've heard good things about Intel, Samsung, and Crucial's m4 lines. Unfortunately, without a look at actual return rates, it's more of a "feeling"...

Hate to say it (because it looks like it may be too late), but dual channel operations looks to only add ~5% performance at most. In most benchmarks, it adds even less, with performance benefits in most games less than 1%. You'd probably be looking at a larger boost from file caching with more...

Any advantages of creating a separate partition for data?

Partitions primarily exist to help organize date. Your use case of creating an OS paritition for mirroring onto an SSD at a later date is a great use for paritions. Partitions can also make it easier to do formats on a disk and not use all your data. One note about mirroring - do some...

Why isn't ECC memory used more?

That really sucks - I'm sorry to hear about your problems. By any chance, are you sure that the issue is the memory and not something else? A bad firmware/os update? A faulty drive? A bad motherboard or a bad NIC? I hope you're still under the manufacturers warranty so you can get it fixed...

There is no legal obligation what so ever - CPUs, RAM, etc all come with warranties which expressly limit liability due to damages from data loss. No company in their right mind would ever sell a part that warrantied data loss unless they added the cost of data loss into the price of the...
