The ARRL is the best source of information on what it takes to get into Ham Radio in the USA, other countries have similar organizations. Since the FCC removed the Morse Code requirement a few years ago the test is mainly electronics, rules, and general practices.
Something like this is what I...
Nice one! LOL
I stop by Anandtech to check out the articles and read a few forum posts but I've been spending most of my time in astronomy and now getting back into Ham Radio. Combining those two and PC knowledge should lead to some interesting projects.
I gave up being a CPU Enthusiast a long time ago. Now a PC is just a tool to be used to accomplish more imaginative goals.
My next goal is a sub-orbital atmospheric monitoring package (helium balloon with a light-weight computer controlled instrument package).
Perdomot,
I do some astrophotography and going from a 965 to a 1090 has increased the speed of stacking my photos in Deep Sky Stacker, but that's an example of an application that not too many people use. Deep Sky Stacker will push all 6 cores to 100%.
Where going from a 965 to a 1090 also...
Not much of an upgrade, by itself, but I'm hoping it will help with DeepSkyStacker.
The program runs pretty much on a single thread when scanning an image file for stars, then would max out all 4 cores of my 965 while stacking the image files. I've thrown 21 files at it and it took an hour and...
My daughters system has an AM2+ motherboard with 4GB of DDR2 memory. With the latest BIOS update it will handle all of the currently available AMD processors that are rated at 125W or lower, including the X6 1090T. So if you keep the old memory, you should be able to find a motherboard that...
Each OS is on its own drive.
Sometimes if you're lucky and get a motherboard with the same chipset manufacturer, the new and old chipsets are simular enough where XP will boot on the new motherboard.
I have WinXP and Win7 Ult setup as a dual boot. No need to go into the BIOS to switch OS's. Instal XP first the Win7, you'll get a menu to select earlier version on Win or Win7. The drive letter designations are dependant on the OS but both OS's see all drives and partitions. WinXP is...
My mom's a grandma and I set her up with:
Athlon II 620
4GB RAM
4670 ATI Video
Gigabyte 770 motherboard
Win XP
It's a nice jump in speed from a:
2200 Athlon XP
2GB RAM
7500 ATI Video
Win 2K
Is it over-kill for what she uses it for? Sure it is, but I would rather have her system...
I've dropped a 5750 into an X2-4800 system.
It scores better in the graphics benchmarks than a 4670 in an X4-620 but not as good as a 5750 in an X4-620 (even when down clocked to 2.4GHz).
This might give you an idea of the performance range best suited for your system.
I would suggest getting an antenna that has a built in amplifier. Most of the PC tuner cards on the market have little or no AGC (Automatic Gain Control) so the channels with strong OTA signals are the only ones that won't break up.
My setup is a little off from the standard setup. I'm...
Waffleironhead has probably pointed out your problem.
I put a 5750 into a NForce4 SLI board and it didn't work in the top PCIE slot. I put the 5750 in the bottom PCIE slot and the card worked at 1X. In order to get the PCIE slot to run at a higher rate I had to enable SLI in the BIOS and...
