Any brands of notebook comp to look out for?

IBM T is the best, but they are out of you price range. I would say, either IBM R series, or Dell Latitude (the letter is in your price range if you get a discount through your university).

Need advice for wifes first laptop

IBM G series is a desktop substitute, good but nice one costs a little more. Say, 23849JU is $1,189. However, this one is P4, much better than Celeron. Actually, if you can efford not buying Celeron - do not buy it. HP is OK, and its cheaper, so you might consider it too.

Laptop newbie!

Go to ubid.com and look for yourself. Its refurbished, but it still is likely to be as good as new, for 600$ you can find good deals. Also, for 600$ you might get a really good desktop, are you sure laptop is what you want? Its my 5th year at academia, and I bought laptop only now - cant say I...

Latex for Windows

I work with math-content papers a lot and I would like to have some Latex on my PC. I tried the thing called Miktex, but for some reason its very buggy on my computer, does not work at all almost. Do you know a good Latex program for windows?

Norton vs. McAfee

Ups, right. I have Norton only for half a year for free, after that I'll install McAfee. However it seems that i'd better switch to McAfee right now. Do you think firewall like ZoneAlarm is crucial? My friend disadvises me having it since it slows web down.

Norton vs. McAfee

I got Norton Antivirus with my R51 Thinkpad. I can also download McAfee from my university software destribution. Which one would you recommend to use? Using both seems to be not to good for speed (eats RAM I guess).

Thinkpad extra RAM

Its the foloowing. I do not see it say 200-pin ... On the other hand, it was the one recommended by Crucial for my R51 1836. I thought they know what to recommend, was I wrong? Crucial Part Number: CT368236 256MB DDR PC2700 ? Unbuffered ? Non-parity ? DDR333 ? 2.5V ? 32Meg x 64

Thank you, everybody. I did not find apropriate stick in local store, so I ordered 256 2700 one from www.crucial.com It was 50$, and 512 was twice that, so I decided to go with 256. BTW, thanks to everybody just for this forum. I decided to buy IBM after reading through some laptop topics, and...

Ok, thank you. Just a friend of mine says that for laptops not every memory works. But since already two people tell me that the cheapest one works, I'll try that.

Thank you. So, you say that any 256 chip would work? The guy from tech support I asked said that there many different kinds, the price ranges from 60$ to 200$. Are the cheapest ones ok?

Hey Everybody! I just got R51 Thinkpad and I love it. The only thing, it has only 256 RAM. Do you think I should install more? I never owned a computer with 512 RAM, so I do not know how much it would improve if I add one more memory chip. For some reason IBM sells ones with 512 RAM for too...
