Thanks for all the replies, guys. I'm going to go w/ the cheap CPU + mobo combo. Is a Celeron E1400 going to beat this thing head to head? I see their clock speeds aren't too far off. I can get this @ Newegg for under $50.

Athlon XP 3100+ (2.1ghz single core) vs. Dual Core Atom

My grandpa has a fairly old computer running Windows XP. It's got an old 120gb hard drive, an Athlon XP, and 512mb of RAM. I was thinking about upgrading all of his equipment, and hopefully giving him a smaller, quieter system at the same time. I thought maybe a dual core Atom + 1 gig of RAM...

Has ANYONE been able to find the new Momentus 7200.2 notebook drives in stock? 160gb...

Has anyone had luck? I call random places i up every few days and they all say any day now, but I can't find anyone who has it. Let me know. And if you have the drive itself, how's it working??

Honestly, I have an iBook 1.2 ghz G4 w/ 768mb RAM. It's pretty zippy in OSX. But don't buy a Mac if you're going for pure speed. You'll be dissapointed. I got swayed cuz I love OS X, the iLife suite of apps, and X11 integration to run linux apps. -Kevin

ibook or intel/amd laptop?

I'm a PC guy all the way but I need a laptop for when I study abroad in Spain next year. I bought an iBook and I'm having a great time with it. When I'm in Spain, I just want to take a bazillion pictures. iPhoto is so nice for that stuff. Plus I can get the new iPods... drool... I honestly think...
