OK so the 'part' arrived! Sorry it's taken this long to update -- it was delivered to an address I haven't been to in a while. Anyway, the new 'part' is a whole new stand! You gotta take the panel off and install the stand which is really easy to do. A total of 5 screws are involved. So...

Count me in. My stand started sagging months back, and now it can hardly be raised at all. I too have no dead pixels and am happy with the monitor outside of this nonsense. I pulled the plastic off the top part of the hinge to expose the springs... I don't know how hard (or cheap) it would...

970p 6-bit + dithering

Perhaps I should have gotten a CRT but ... meh. They're so frigging huge. I'm starting to come to terms with my $500 purchase... I'm not happy, but then I'm noticing that Viewsonic's VP930b is apparently 6bit as well. And for the size savings and prettiness, I guess this thing is all right...

Samsung Magictune Calibration

I just got the 970p and I'm trying to use the calibration software that came with it. I have no idea what I'm doing, and the instructions (as you'll see in the link) are HORRIBLE. Anyone used this? Or something similar? What you don't see being done in the animation is the brightness...

The 9 year old 17" CRT is slowly dying (yes! since '96!). So I'm going to purchase an LCD. A quick analogy: I purchased a 6800GT just over a year ago on the advice that putting a LOT of cash ($440 is a lot for me) into a graphics card will pay off over time. And it has. I've played Doom3...
