Setting Up a Home Network

I'm looking for a guide to setting up a home network between two computers, one of which is running Windows XP while the other is running Windows ME. Is it possible to set up file and printer sharing on computers running these two operating systems?

Every time I start my computer, regardless of whether or not it's shut down properly or improperly, scandisk is running. Any idea what's causing this?

$600 Computer

Wow, I didn't realize I could build at this price. All I'd need would be a keyboard and mouse, and if I could possibly find an old CRT monitor in town somewhere, it'd be even cheaper. Is it safe to assume you'd all reccomend a custom build, then?

Although I'd prefer to build my own, I'm looking for a prebuilt simply because I don't think I can build one with an OS and monitor for 600 bucks.

What brands should I be looking at in the $600 pricerange if I need a new PC and monitor? I'd like something with a PCI-express x16 slot, and I don't care if it comes with a videocard because I'd rather buy my own down the line. I'd especially appreciate links to specific sales.

Does anyone have personal experience trying to put a better graphics card in this computer? It comes with some cheap PCI Express 16X card, but I don't know how much power it would use compared to a high end one. What is the range of power-usage on video cards? Also, will a Dell case accept...

Dell Upgrades

If I bought a Dell (mostly because of the coupons and included monitor), would I be able to upgrade it on my own? Will normal memory and videocards fit into the system, or does Dell make their own sockets? Also, how respectable are Dells cases and powersupplies?
