Right now there are some decent deals out there for what I am looking at ($900-1000 or so athlon laptop)
Should I buy now or wait till mid september and hope for some post school deals?
I guess another way to ask this is:
Does the "back to school" blitz drive prices up due to demand or down...
I dont want it for home use. I want our IT dept to get it for our insanely huge/slow DB.
EDIT:
Also that AMD link says that the CPUS are for 4 and 8 way servers. It doesn't say that the 8-way actually EXIST...
EDIT: man my spelling sucks...
I thouhgt 8 way opterons were coming and that they were going to be insane. I can't seem to find any info on them.
AMD's site makes no mention of them.
AMD's benchmarks
Also I can't find any good, current benchmarks using MS SQL.
Sigh, so much for convincing IT that opterons are the way to...
I can't find any benchmarks they want. They want windows 2000 with SQL 2000 benchmarks. I cant find any with google. Anands benchmarks were dismissed because "its only doing 256 transactions a second we are doing over 2500...". Are there any good opteron reviews out there that are on windows 2000??
hardware moves swiftly? wwhhhaaat? It will be 1-2 years before PCI-E is standard. and probably 5 years beofre it is off Mobo's. NVidia doesn't even have a card lined up till almost a year from now. Look at SATA, 80%+ of drives are still PATA. Hardware moooveess sllloowwwlllyyy....
BTX is no...
I'd go pirate a copy, since you already own it then you don't have to deal with the freakin activation.
Is that legal or moral? I don't know, but its an easy route. I mean MS is trying to block people who DONT own XP from getting a copy.

If you have win XP go for 512. Though 384 should be okay, though.
Heres a cool trick. open task manager go to Perfromance. look at Commit Charge. The "peak" in that box is the most that your PC has used in this session (divide by 1024 to get MB). don't logoff for a week, see what your high is...
I think that ATX is serving us fine, just need new powersupplies with difft power conectors.
I bet Intel will push BTX end next year, but not many will take up thier offer.
Temp internet definatly hits the HD. Lots of small, widely scattered files.
I'd love to have 1GB of ram so 512 could be a ram drive for IE temp.
One way to work around that is to have a batch file that runs every night.
run cleanmgr /sageset:99 then set up a nightly batch file to do this...

When does your HD grind the most? Thats where a new fast shiny HD should help the most right?
For me:
Windows startup
Winamp loading files
Compiling a VS project.
Starting Games.
When it hits the swapfile
What do you guys think?
