What benefit does flashing to dd-wrt have?

boomerang's experience isn't typical, so don't get discouraged. My WRT54G v.4 was never as fast and stable as it is now with the Tomato Firmware. I wouldn't consider ever using an 3rd party firmware capable router with the stock firmware again.

want to share files with my neighbor

Honestly, If you both want simultaneous access of one specific Music folder, Hamachi is the easiest way to do it. With Dropbox, the files have to be uploaded to the web, which, if you think about it, is a useless step for what you want to do. If it was me, Hamachi would be my only option...

ultra vnc on mutiple computers on single network

After discovering LogMeIn, VNC is dead to me.. so to speak. Look into it, its so easy to manage multiple machines, and its web interface is incredibly well laid out. If i was on the same LAN, VNC might be a better option for the speed, but over the internet LogMeIn is almost a no brainer for its...

Update: Fixed! University is now blocking all external connection attempts to my computer

I say +1 for LogMeIn, i love that service. So easy to use.

Networking solution to stream HD Video to Living Room?

Wireless just isn't going to be stable enough (even draft-n) for streaming full length films with absolutely no hiccups, there is just to many variables. I have the same x264 1080p encoded files and even with a dual band draft n router ill still occasionally have buffering issues. I say run a wire.

My motherboard always boots into a 100mbit

keep it unplugged during boot, then plug in once in windows, see what happens then. Not sure what to do next as Im alittle drunk right now, but you can figure that out...

Wireless N routers and cards are worth the money...

So whats your "un"-absolute statement spidey, off the record? FWIW, smallnetbuilder.com's charts show the Apple Airport Extreme having the fastest average AND max downstream throughput of any wireless router they have tested, and that is in single AND dual band. The MAX they saw was 133Mbps...

If you're really getting ~140Mbps on you're wireless network then, well, damn. Im struggling with 25Mbps on my G network. Granted thats between one floor, and across the house.
