Adding a Windows server to an existing domain.

Your best bet will probably be to get an old desktop, get a PCI-to-PCMCIA card, and then set the PC up as a router or with Windows's Internet Connection Sharing. Keep in mind that the Internet you get through these cards is only meant for email, web browsing, and other low bandwidth tasks...

I expect it will be rolled into computer authentication to a domain controller. It's going to be wholly transparent if you set it up right. Microsoft has never been so stupid as to screw the corporate customers just to make their lives easier for dealing with home user piracy.

You will need to be connected to the network before you even think about running dcpromo, but you should be fine building it off site and then joining and promoting it once you get it installed. If you run dcpromo without having access the the existing domain, you will create a new, different...

I have a win 98(non SE) laptop with 64 megs of memory.

You will have to get drivers from the device manufacturer. There is no generic USB support. Or you could, you know, use an OS from this millennium. I have little sympathy for someone who can't get modern hardware to work with an OS from 1998.

How to partition a hard drive?

To a HDD manufacturer, 1 kilobyte = 1000 bytes. So 200 GB = 200,000,000,000 bytes. In Windows (and most OSs) 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes. So the above 200,000,000,000 bytes will show up as 186 raw gigabytes or 190,734 megabytes. Technically, the HDD manufacturers are right.

XP Pro partitioning recommendations request

IMX, a paging file partition just doesn't work very well. Typically, Windows writes random information to the middle of the partition when it formats it (Sys Vol Info) and the paging file gets to straddle that and be forever fragmented.

Remove embedded Service Pack 1a

There were a number of patches from MS for Pre-SP2 WinXP that caused slowdown. Running anything less than the most up-to-date service packwith all patches is a really bad idea. The only time you shouldn't do it is when you have software you need that specifically doesn't work with it.
