For the love of god, or computers, or whatever - someone please help me determine DirectX compliance in a sound card

Any SB16 compatible sound card should suffice. No point in buying the brand name for a Win98 machine. You can get a Sweex sound card which has all the benefits of the Soundblaster for a third of the price. The one in the link costs about £5 in the UK. Illustrated manual for it here

Well, strictly speaking, a "DirectX compatible sound card" is a contradiction in terms because DirectX is a graphics accelerator and silent as a grave. The audio component is called "DirectSound 3D" which is what you'll see referred to most often on sound card sites. A good gaming soundcard...

3D Gaming still stuttery

Correct driver installation order If you install your graphics drivers before you install DirectX, the 3D controller won't function properly.

OK Doctor Penguin, you know best. :D Just as a small addition to all the other advice in this thread and that concerns a setting in the Advanced menu of IE Properties. If you disable the option called "Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)", you'll get a prompt if a web page attempts...

What sort of RAID setup are you running? And over how many hard disks? Symtdi.sys is part of the Symantec Client Security package. More info on that one here (do a CTRL+F to spring directly to it).

partitioning

Yes, it's a much better idea to have a second partition where you store everything you create yourself or download from the web. That way, if you do have to reformat and reinstall the OS, all your private data remains intact.

You would be correct in saying that "nail.exe" is spyware, but that's just a component of the main body which is a Trojan/virus, or at least that's the impression I get from various docs around the web i.e. this site

PC died and/or dying...any ideas?

When you first install the OS, it creates a hardware hash based on certain components in the system. If you change a major component like the CPU, then the checksum no longer matches and the OS will think it's running on a different machine. If you don't reactivate within 3 days, the anti-piracy...

Do a cold boot (wait 60 secs before you power on again). If you don't power off occasionally, the memory never gets flushed.
