SATA problems on Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939

I built a computer for my younger brother for Christmas, and after much fighting I have gotten it into some semblance of stability...but there are two problems I would like to resolve if possible. His system is as follows: A64 3500+ GB K8NSNXP-939 motherboard ATI X800 Pro 300 GB SATA HDD...

is it safe to push a CRT a bit harder

Good to know, but what about resolution? I've got a monitor that claims to top out at 1024x768, but so long as it's set up as "default monitor" it will do 12x10. Any thoughts on that?

Upgrade GF3 to FX5600...no improvement?!?!?

I tried the same thing, found out the same thing, bit the bullet and bought a 9800 Pro. Haven't looked back since.

Good 21" monitor for less than $350?

hey, there's a long-standing thread over in hot deals about some refurb 21-inchers...they sound pretty good, you might want to look into it.

Where to get bawls for cheap?

Damn, I didn't realize they were so expensive normally...usually I buy while @ Lanwar (Louisville, KY) where they're $1/bottle, regardless of how many you get.

barton 2600+

Initially, at least, they were NOT planning this...2500, 2800, and 3000 models were it. Something does not seem right about them releasing a new barton that is not top of the line. I'd look for a bit more info before touching this.

Is hacking Illegal?

You'd best take your home network off the Internet for this one...running port-scanning utilities and other hacker's tools is a good way to get your connection shut off. And as far as legality goes, it's rather iffy...if you're in the USA, the DMCA has some rather vague things in it which could...

Have I got the KT133A bug?

I had a KT133 (may or may not have been 'a') based system for a while, experienced the same thing. Eventually found out mine was due to a dying NIC, fixed by replacing it. Just my experience, it may be useful.

Update: I spoke too soon... :-(

Heh, I can agree...Latest swap, GF3 to a 9800P, went w/o any issues...Just before I reformatted due to drive changes, I looked at my control panel, and still had all my nvidia stuff on there...guess I got lucky not having any issues.
