What is DDR-II, when will motherboards support it, and is it worth waiting for?

from what I've heard from the guys at Beyond3D forums, DDR II is simply DDR SDRAM but designed to run at higher clock rates. it has one disadvantage (at least when it comes to video cards) and that is that it has an extended (from 2bit in DDR to 4 bit in DDR2) burst or something like that...

ya, that's the whole point. the flip chip packaging is one of the major reasons why a near doubling in transistor count while sticking with .15 micron doesn't kill the clockspeed.. as for the P4 @ .18 vs Athlon @ .18 thats a terrible comparison.. first of all, the P4 topped out at I would say...

What do you guys do with your old Computer/Hardware?

every upgrade I get is carefully planned, so that most (if not all) parts that get replaced go into a second (and now 3rd) computer. every time I upgrade my fast computer something trickles down to the other computers and so they almost always get an upgrade at the same time. of course...

Next .13 Athlon rev to support 166FSB?

it certainly would be a good move on AMD's part to do this, their current chip CAN (and obviously does) benefit from it. if they are having problems scaling their CPU in MHZ, this is a simple way to get around that while maintaining at least SOME competition with Intel. btw, I'm assuming...

so you sort of saw the flip chip package coming? the R300 is something like 110 million transistors, which is nothing like the GF4's 60 something million (I think it was 64 mill).. so assuming a similar clockspeed is foolish IMHO.

So where are these $99 Radeon 8500s?

what do you mean, 'ok with the brokerage thing'?? it's just like adding tax to anything we buy AFAIK, ie, here in Manitoba we have 14% total tax, so at $158*1.14 to give me $180.. at least that's my take on it. oh I could be wrong though.

raytracing is when you take a light source and use reflections of that light off of objects to get soft shadows (which is what every shadow in real life pretty much is). it simulates real life light just like Aureal's A3D 2.0 simulated reflections off of walls to get proper environment effects...
