In regards to which will be better, the 3.6ghz oc with lower memory bandwidth or the 3.4 with higher memory bandwidth, the 3.6ghz number should give you better results. I know we are used to saying more memory bandwidth = better, but the problem here is we are actually getting so much memory...

Windows 2003 Server or Windows XP?

You can do it, but it will require a decent amount of work to enable all the workstation features and get it up and running ok for gaming. Also, all that said, its compatability with games will be fluid at best, and since the whole 2K3 line is designed for servers only, I wouldn't expect it to...

Well depends on how you define *cheap* but I doubt the lowest end 800mhz processors will cost in the 3ghz 533 fsb range right now. My best guess would be a 2.4 800mhz FSB processor will likely cost around the current price of a 2.8ghz P4 then the prices will rise from there. I'd expect around...

You do need a higher clock speed to take full advantage of an 800mhz fsb, *but* a 2.4 running at an 800mhz fsb shows anywhere between a 3 to 20% performance improvement when paired with dual DDR400 ram over a 533mhz fsb 2.4ghz p4. It depends on the task of course. As for Canterwood, yes it...

DVI connection locks me in 60 Hz

Actually, check out www.overclockers.com about this. They recently have had a series of articles on the DVI connection. Basically its a bandwidth problem that will likely be resolved through a new standard being released later this year. That said, a refresh rate of 60 on an LCD is different...

less than a Linux newbie

Oh in regards to windows programs/games there are two things you may want to play around with. Wine is the windows emulator for linux and works very well for some applications. It takes a little work to get it set up but it does work well for some stuff. But yeah, for pretty much everything...

windows xp upgrade requires OS already installed?

Is his Windows ME CD-ROM an "Upgrade" disk as well? If so he needs a real full install CD-rom to prove ownership, and it will not work with a Windows 95 CD-ROM. Another possibility, is his Windows ME disk a restore disk and not a pure Windows Install disk? If its a restore he might have...

Help with identd issues in Mandrake 9

I figured it out..the problem is since my net connection is being fed through Windows XP..it turns out windows XP is not identd friendly. So what I did was download a nice little identd server to run in windows and handle any identd requests and boom...no more problems.
