You're on the right path. Put Windows 10 on a flash drive using the media tool Microsoft provides. Just select "Create installation media for another PC" when creating the image onto the flash drive. You should not have to use a key during install or afterwards. If the current Windows 10...

Thanks for replying lehtv. I used the combo deal to save a little. If this current setup will last a year or so with his gaming I will upgrade the video card first and the other parts if they need it.

The monitor is an old Acer P236H. It's resolution is 1920x1080 but 1280x720 should be fine for the new demanding games. I've never been a serious gamer so I haven't followed video cards etc closely.

I can spend around 500. It would be for my son - his birthday is coming in a few months. Think I could get by with a video card between 100 - 200 for now with the current hardware? Then in a few months get a newer mobo/cpu/ram combo and a larger psu if needed?

Can't activate Windows 10

Aolish, Windows 8 should activate without issue. I have installed Windows 10 and went back to Windows 8 at least 4 times using the same key.

Brain, the upgrade is per PC. A 4GB USB will suffice. If you decide to upgrade all machines you can use the same thumb drive to do a clean install afterwards (if you prefer that over simply upgrading).

How to run applications in Ubuntu?

Open a terminal and type vlc. If you're using a DE/WM that has a run dialog box you can type vlc there too.
