AMD's FX-60 is a Dual Core

new nvidia drivers utilize dual core to some extent, usually boosting dual core performance past single core FX series...

Multithreaded games are out now!

Quake 4 is not multithreaded. the new nvidia drivers however boost performance from X2 processors to FX-caliber or higher (X2 4800 > FX-57) i would imagine these drivers would do this in any game. so yes, with just these drivers, the X2 and other dual core chips are good enough for serious...

Opteron 165 start.

i ordered a 170 OEM from Monarch on the 9th, it shipped out on the 10th... crossing fingers and hoping its a 0530

Athlon 64 FX-60 preview...

i dunno how much better the silicon could get...aren't the Opterons rigorously tested for 24-7 server environments? imho, you're paying almost 4 digits for the unlocked multiplier.

Any benchmarks out there that show dual core processors performing better in games?

btw those drivers are the reason i went for an Opteron 170 over a 14X series... i only play Quake 4 :)

yup they are. http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7426/threads1ab.jpg <-- that is what it (81.85 driver) does. and it boosts X2 performance to about on par with the FX series in Quake 4... now if only Raven/id cared enough to make their engine multithreaded, which they apparently don't...

i have to ask...

anybody have dual opteron 800-series? for a total of 4 cores? :) are there any benchmarks? imagine if they had a mobo that had dual socket 940, and dual sli (quad video cards).

My Opteron 170 arrived

i am going this same route. good luck :) just ordered a OEM Opteron 170 from Monarch for $346 after a $10 off coupon. was panicking by the storm on the 165 and 140-series :( still need to sell off some parts on ebay, buy mobo/psu/vid card.

time to change PSU?

my system will have the following: dfi lanparty nf4 sli-dr mobo amd opteron s939 overclocked to at least 2.8ghz (hopefully staying under 1.5v) gf 7800gtx (only one) sb audigy2 zs gamer 1 dvd drive, 1 cd drive, 2 hard drives, and several fans. is my old Antec 480W power supply still...
