Intel Investor Meeting 2015: November 19

If you accept those numbers for Samsung 20 nm, then it's not any denser than Intel's 22 nm node. (Those metal and gate pitches are exactly the same as Intel's 22 nm.) They did have a published 20 nm process with 64 nm metal pitch...I don't know if any products were released with this.

So how does intel Core M HD 5300 compare to Intel Iris Pro?

I was assuming that the GT2 part in U-Broadwell will also be called HD5300. Upon further thought, that's probably not true. Yes, HD5300 will at best be similar to HD4400 at 15 watts.

HD5300 definitely not going to be faster than any current Iris Pro chip. You simply can't make up for the extra EUs, increased TDP, and eDRAM. I think 30%+ improvement over HD4400 is probably a reasonable expectation though...

Haswell-e prices leaking

For applications that can heavily utilize a larger number of threads the two extra cores are worth a lot more than the 700 MHz clock speed drop...

Apple does not use Broadcom basebands. (Broadcom has close to zero baseband design wins, which explains the shuttering of the business.) Broadcom is a big player in Wifi+BT combo chips and are in most of the big sockets (including the iPhone) in that market and have no plans to exit that business.

What does BOM cost have to do with die space usage then? Inefficient use of space affects die cost, not how much the other components of the system cost. Unless you were obliquely trying to imply that the wasted space could have been used for functionality which currently requires discrete...

That's not what bill of materials refers to. The chip itself is just fine in terms of cost. The problem is that it needs a lot more supporting parts than competing ARM SoCs to make a functioning tablet, thereby requiring subsidies to make it work. And the issue here isn't wasted space either...

What? This is the whole point of SMT...to share execution units between multiple threads. Any old processor can switch contexts to run one thread at a time. A smart implementation may decide to fill all execution units from one thread until a specific pipeline stalls, but it certainly doesn't...

It might have fewer EUs than Cherry Trail due to less competitive pressure in the laptop market, but it can't just be a fused version of the tablet chip as it will need support for SATA/PCI-Express which is totally useless due to power/cost constraints in a tablet.

Xeon and i7 differences for a new build

They do not require the use of ECC memory. You do need to make sure that your motherboard BIOS supports the Xeon you're interested in. (Most Z87 motherboards do, I don't know about the H8x motherboards.) Note that you do need a workstation motherboard with a C22x chipset if you *want* to use ECC...

Those are crazy expensive...are they just meant to rip off corporate procurement departments? (I can't imagine spending that much on a Bay Trail tablet when you can buy pretty high end Haswell convertibles for similar prices...)
