What can I do to test a new hard drive?

i agree with jwilliams... as someone who has literally used hundreds of drives, and have had a large number fail, from every manufacturer - drives go bad, sometimes come bad... If im buying a external Harddrive to use in my raid 6 array - before i potentially void the warranty by opening up...

this is what im using from now on... badblocks -svw -c 4096 -b 4096 /dev/sdb and then some smartctl commands prolly for internal drives

HW RAID Compatable Harddrives

Toshiba Canvio 3tb - HDWC130XK3J1

The Model numbers are below... Im looking for a specifc one... but they havent released them internal yet, only external... So i expect they are using some of these.. If you do ever open one up... if you could post back it would be appreciated...

Does anyone have one of these? could they open them up, and post a picture of the label? I cant find a tear down, anywhere or what the model number of the acutal drive is inside the enclosure.. Please - and Thank you

Recommend a TV tuner for my HTPC

5 = yes , you can set up mythtv as a backend and use a plugin for xbmc to watch your recorded tv.... for number 6 go with a hdhomerun, and dont look back, one box, plugged in anywhere on your network, and can record two channels at a time

What is the best HTPC software?

XBMC for the frontend... Raid6 file server for the backend running nfs and samba MythTV to record TV shows (integrates with XBMC now) and XBMC is integrating PVR in an upcoming release. already in some subs....
