You can always modify the fan so that you can use the clips. If you've got a Dremel motor tool (or any other motor tool), you can grind away the posts on the fan so that the fan clips could hook onto the fan housing. Alternatively, you can either file away the posts with a file, or use a saw...

Effect of room temp on your CPU load temps

Problems with overclocked 3800+ X2

On a lark, here's a question: Were you using CoreTemp at the time the shutdowns occurred? If so, you may be interested in this.. Hope that helps.

MSI K8N Diamond: No more than 230htt?

You didn't mention if you did this, but did you lower your CPU multiplier? That is likely the reason for the boot failures.

Antec P180b Vibration

Just throwing this out as a possibility, but maybe the fan has got bearing problems. A seized bearing would cause vibrations at any RPM. The only solution would be fan replacement. Hope that helps.

How do I check stepping

No other way other than to remove your HSF, clean off the TIM, then have a look. No software will tell you your stepping code, unfortunately.

Need input on a cpu upgrade

Whether or not any Opteron dual-core can get up to 2.8GHz is largely dependent on the stepping of the chip you get. This is largely true of the 165, 170, and 175s. You can check this out; it shows that certain batches of Socket 939 Opterons were better than others. Not all Opteron chips...

It's entirely possible that you've hit your chip's wall. More voltage injection would only result in more heat.

At Zim: I beg to differ, sir. I've had my 165 up to 2.727GHz stable, 1.4V VCore. I'm presently running it at 2.655GHz, 1.36V VCore. All this at air cooling. With more bravery and maybe water cooling, I'm sure I can go up to 2.8GHz, maybe even a little bit beyond that.
