I've been happy with the Dell E310dw (rebadged Brother). It's been a painless experience on Peppermint OS.

Best Linux distro for old Dell Inspiron 6000?

Agreed! BTW, Peppermint Linux OS is a cloud-centric OS based on Lubuntu, a derivative of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Peppermint users can install applications natively from Ubuntu compatible repositories. Peppermint is an Ubuntu spin and supports whatever is possible in Ubuntu.

Nothing is wrong with cURL. cURL is your friend! The problem is, most ppl have never heard of it, or know what's it's good for... Seriously, life would be difficult for me without it -- but, the OP didn't ask about that, did he? ;)

anyone run linux from a flashdrive?

I always carry a full install of Peppermint OS, on a 4GB bootable USB thumb drive with persistence. Takes a minute or two to boot on most machines, but I've never run across a machine that it wouldn't perform adequately on. Drives IT departments crazy, BTW. They can't figure out what's...

I use awk, gawk, sed, grep, regex, and (dare I say) curl on a regular basis. It probably wouldn't hurt brushing up on these things... ;)

Ubuntu 14.04 Unity slowness

Use the Gnome-Shell DE instead of Unity. It's available in the official Ubu repos. I test Unity, but run Gnome-Shell 99% of the time. No complaints here. :sneaky: My ancient GeForce 7600 GT AGP runs 3D accel just fine on nVidia legacy drivers. No LLVMpipe here. ;) ~ VinDSL Unity...
