Best Linux distro for laptop and general Linux Noob?

Mobile Celeron on a desktop board?

i have a 2.0ghz P4m on an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe and it's running at 3.0ghz w/ Kingston HyperX4000. running at 12x250 right now.

Compal Laptops

i really like my sister's Compaq X1000, i used to work for a company that only supplied us w/ Compaq Evo notebooks. they seemed very good to me.

I need your help picking a laptop.

i'd go w/ an IBM. i have a T22 and i'm still using it. i love it. but IBM's are expensive. in which case i would get either a Toshiba or an HP/Compaq. the new DV1000 is nice. also my sister has a Compaq x1000, those things are great. i love the 15.4" widescreen. definitely get a Centrino...

Making your old DVD burner burn dual-layer media

does the NEC provide bitsetting. i've been using a 451s LiteOn upgraded to 851s and soon to be 832s. i like the LiteOn i don't have to set the bitsetting. it's in the firmware along w/ the hack. does NEC have the same thing? i've been looking around and some people say yes and some no and some...

Staples online sale 7/18-7/24

that's all a gamble on what you can get w/ an 8x Pacific Digital. it can be an 851s, 811s, 2500a, or an Optorite. most of the ones i've seen when they had them at OM were 811s. i didn't see any 2500a. you can tell by the serial number on the box. i'd say it's only worth it if you get an 851s or...

4k for a laptop...can't decide between p4 and p-m system

there are new A64's coming out that should use less power and save on battery life. but if i had that much money and didn't care about weight or battery life, i'd get an AlienWare laptop.

Is the TT Silent Boost better than the stock AMD HSF?

i just bought a TT Extreme 12 and i'll let you know how it goes. basically the same heatsink but w/ 2 more fins and a different fan. definitely better than stock, look at the reviews on NewEgg. i've had an Alpha PAL8045 but that's just not going to cut it anymore, i've have a CoolerMaster...

Thermaltake vs Antec

i have 3 Antecs, a 300w, a 350 SmartBlue, and a 550 TrueControl and I have 2 Enermax 350's Whisper Quiet. i like them all, they do their job and they do it well. but the 550 is my favorite b/c i can control my fans on it also. but it's pricey. if i didn't get lucky and find the 550 at a great...

best case?

i remember seeing that Lian-Li in an article at TomsHardware, and i love the idea, but it's too expensive. i think the CoolerMaster WaveMaster or the TT Tsunami are great cases.

i would get an A64. TiaMat is right in saying you should wait for a good 939 mobo. looks like 939 is going to be the future of A64.

New Ballistix Memory

it's about time they get into the overclocking market. low-latency Crucial memory is definitely worth a look at. interesting to see how they perform against Corsair, Mushkin, OCZ, and Kingston HyperX.

Need to cool better!

1st try to reapply the heatsink and use a VERY thin layer of Artic Silver. then try this...use only 1 intake fan, and keep the 2 exhaust fans, don't the other fan blowing over the cpu, try to create a vacuum type of deal in your case, where you're blowing out a lot of the hot air and not really...

Which CPU should I choose?? Help a noobie out!!

if you're just running apps and stuff, i've read that A64's can give you as much as a 15% increase in application performance. so i'd get an A64. if you want cheap, i'd get a 2500+.
