My friend was having the same problem. Using MSI Afterburner turn on extend official overclocking limits along with unofficial overclocking mode. It fixed his issue.
I got a few PM's about the 290x and what settings I am running.
sgminer 4.1.0 with x11mod.

This is an original BF4 Edition Sapphire card with Elpidia memory.
Currently been running for 24 hours with 0.1% reject and 0 HW errors. Hope it helps.
I think I am almost done tweaking the 290x for x11. Stable 4.3mh/s @ 1100mhz core and 1450 memory.
Need to put a bit more work into the 7950's (2.8mh/s) and 7970's (3.2mh/s) once I am done with the 290x.
The 5970 doesn't want to perform nearly as good as the newer cards, but I think it is...
Anyone with a 7970 and/or 7950 running x11? What settings are you running and what speeds are you getting? The 7950's seems to be going correctly, but I have to completely change the 7970 settings (from scrypt) to get decent speeds.
Honestly use a press and just fix the block yourself. If you don't have one see if a friend does or find a local machine shop. You could also do it with vice, but a press would be much more accurate.
