i want to retire today instead of working for 12 hours... i could afford to do it

but what's the point of life without making as much money as possible

just gotta try to get rid of the constant headache the deadline pressure is giving me

i handled this 80 hour week stuff a lot better when i was in my 20s
Time to find a new job?

I'm always jealous or the retired. Not to sound like an arse but I have a brother that was given 3 months to live. I am taking care of his affairs, and he is leaving me a sizeable retirement. I found out I can keep his 401k and take distributions for 10 years, which would get me to the age of 66 with plenty of money. I feel like a butthead because he kept scrimping and saving after his retirement because he was afraid of running out of money, but he is encouraging me to get out and enjoy life with it. I always wanted to take him on a trip, driving along route 66 in a rented muscle car, but alas now he can't do it. The wife and I do well for ourselves, but we would like to retire earlier rather than later. Too many people we know never got to enjoy the fruits of all of their years of labor.

The thing I look forward to most in retirement is being able to stay up late and then sleep in late lol. Right now I'm in bad at 9:00 and up at 5:00. I might still get up early in retirement, but at least it won't be the alarm telling me to.

yeah just about

but if i could stick with it for 10 or 15 more years i would have a really cushy retirement

provided i don't have a heart attack before that
What's the point of holding out for 10-15 years if life is going to suck for that time? You need to balance the needs of the future with living in the present.

You could also end up having some age-related disability in 10-15 years too, since we're all just "temporarily abled", so you need time to do things now.

After 5 yrs retired, I still wake up at 4 am to be to work by 530, old sleeping habits are hard to break apparently.

I am having trouble deciding. I am 68 and could financially, but some days I love my job and some days I wonder why I am still there. I LOVE doing nothing, but even so, I might be like the dog that finally catches the car! And who can't use more money? I am hanging out until something happens. I guess one answer is use this time to run some tests on being retired.

Fuck that…life is WAY too short to work a job you hate.

been doing it for 15 years, had about 2 good years and 13 crappy years

but the last year has been one of the worst and it really ramped up in the past couple weeks

i can't wait to retire. just found out i'll be working all weekend and probably 80 hours weeks after that for a while.
Do you keep doing it because the position you're in doesn't offer an upward or even lateral move if you were to leave the company?

I'd take a pay cut to get out of the company if that were the case.
