So the king got a painting done.

Anyone else hear a faint chant of "blood for the blood god" when they see this?

It's a disturbingly creepy painting. I kinda like it but it's not one I'd commission for myself if I didn't want to look like I was wading through a sea of blood to my throne of skulls. Maybe that's what he was going for.

Getting some real Vigo the Carpathian vibes off that thing. Be sure not to look directly at it.

It's awfully bright. A few centuries of aging should improve it. Maybe hang it over a working fireplace to accelerate the aging.

I think it captures Charles' life quite well, forever fading into the draperies.

it's fucking ghastly. It may be "internet cool" but this painting, for this person, needs to be "stately", not "artistic".

The royals have never been able to pull off “stately”, that’s reserved for Hollywood.

Given he used the term "awfully bright", it's pretty clear he wasn't referring to dim-bulb Charles himself.
Fair point. The gold braid, fancy hat and general bling is pretty bright though!
Have they made him a fancy hat of his own or is he wearing one of the old ones?

Certainly edgy impressions for posterity.

Maybe he did help conspire to axe Diana and subconciously knows he's getting some hellfire....

What's with the medals? I thought the king was supposed to be the font of all honors and therefore required no honors beyond being king.

minority opinion I guess. I like it. its certainly more modern, The butteryfly represents his environmental pursuits. a bit of an afront to the monarchy while being in traditional garb.

When I saw this in my news feed yesterday I really thought it was an onion satire type post. So I click through to read the first article I saw and it seemed to be a regular news article. It took me a minute to accept that this was real.

I mean you couldn't write this shit better.

Wouldn't say that's a minority opinion - I don't know if I "like it" or not. Feels like a meaningless question to ask, whether one 'likes' it.

It depends what one thinks the purpose of such a painting is.

Not sure I really see the need for painting portraits of monarchs at all (we all know what he looks like, no shortage of images of him already in the historical record), such portraits are just some weird thing that is done because it's "traditional", like the Monarchy itself. That this one is in a very non-traditional style is neither good nor bad, it just is what it is.

I do wonder what the distant future will make of it though, what they'll decide it says about our era. Maybe it will one day be seen as a harbinger for the coming final demise of the monarchy? Or maybe they'll just note that "art went a bit weird in that era, didn't it?"

I actually like it, too. It's different and it definitely makes you think a bit. Offensive to most probably, but that's what art should do. It needs to make you a bit uncomfortable in order to challenge your sensibilities.

Anyway, can't believe no one has mentioned this yet, but my first thought on seeing this is that King Chuck asked the artist to paint for him the realization of his truest, most desired dream. You know, from that infamous letter (or phone call)?

The only thing it actually made me think of was how relevant it is to have a British royal portrait drenched in blood.
