in that example above, if they had tamped the charge with screened sand or soil, we would have been safe. that would have gone up in a harmless cloud but it would have inhibited the large pieces enough.
Anything larger and it would have rained shrapnel.

Depending on what you want to break, they can be incredibly violent and energetic.
"We had to be a 1/4 mile away from the blast to stay clear of pressure wave and debris."
We probably should have been a 1/4 mile away when they touched off a charge set on a boulder that had a missed charge while building Cowlitz Falls Dam.

I was working swings. Day shift drilled all day and they blasted at shift change, generating about 3000 CY of rock that we moved out of the cut.
One day that had a big solid nugget that was out of the pattern, and rather than build a trail to get a drill to it, Kray Kray Coogan cooked up a shaped charge idea. Oh yeah. He was nuts.
We were above the cut in our yard where those young trees are on the right. CRACK!
Here comes this line drive head sized rock, traveling in a very flat arc. It bounced off the 3' diameter fender log <Bonk, splinters flying> and back down to the cut. Had it cleared the log it would have one-hopped through anything up there, conexs, equipment, us humans.

First time I experienced a good sized shaped charge blast in the shit I was surprised how far the debris field extended outward and how pleasingly scary it was to feel the effects compared with viewing it. This was happening when we were collapsing tunnel systems the bad guys were operating in. Really powerful and dangerous as you mentioned. Reminds me how I was repeatedly told that technically speaking there is no such thing as a controlled explosion.

Because the crew doesn't have Visa's for entering the US they are not allowed to get off the ship.

I recall how violations against humanity was leveled against foreign commercial fishing vessels that were moored at state harbors in Hawaii for the same reasons, where those boats remained at dock for months at a time. Those boats are ~70-80 ft. which calls for rather cramp living conditions when the crew aren't allowed to ever disembark.

Ohman… I interviewed for a job as a Hughes 500 helicopter mechanic on a tuna boat off of the California coast way way way back in the day.

Small spotter boat stayed out there for a month at a time! The pilot was the actual person who told me "You can make a shit load of money in a short time if we find the fish. We can stay out here for a month at a time if we don't.”

My ex-wife put the kibosh on that deal at the time.

I was going to AK and give a go at using the 310 for the same thing, coming off land bases. Darling wife was not impressed. Something about trying to get out of a sinking plane in 30 F water did not sit well with her.

^^^ There is a chance that a few of us here may not be alive by the time they play out, which could be decades.
i was once involved in consulting on an insurance lawsuit involving a newly commissioned power plant. one of the transformers blew and so we were investigating the cause of failure. the other involved parties had their own consultants, one of whom was an elderly guy with a lot of experience with heavy duty electrical equipment. while the case was awaiting trial, he passed (he was probably in his 80's though).
