With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

AMD just confirmed these days 4bn $ shipment of MI300 for 2024, given the current AI frenzy they can easily double this number in 2025 if they have some technical advantage, that would surpass their servers or CPU client sales within 2 years.

Guess that s where they ll put their priorities, gaming GPUs will get the minimalist treatment with mid range products that cover 80% of the market, not a bad strategy after all.

AMD just keeps growing the portfolio of products, spending money on their development and introduces them to market.

While other companies either stopped hiring or had rounds of layoffs, AMD just kept on going at the steady pace, not wavering.

The past and upcoming cycles of client GPUs did not hit it out of the ballpark, but AMD is still the only company that can compete and possibly out compete NVidia. And AMD is working on exactly that.

It's them and NV, yeah.
Big lmao, really.

Yeah, there's a good reason NV treats AMD with extreme caution.

Hoping for some tidbits of info on RDNA 4 during computex. Not expecting anything solid before Q4, but im cautiously optimistic.
I've got a 6800, the 7900 GRE has tempted me, but, i've been able to restrain myself thinking RDNA 4 will likely give a little more bang for the buck when it happens.
I dont need an upgrade for my main PC, but, my wife's using my old GPU and she wants the 6800 for her PC.

Side note: Wild Turkey 101 rye .., good, bang for buck
Highland Park 12 year Scotch ... amazing amazing amazing.

I think the embarrassment of doing another Polaris/RDNA1 type generation probably led them to distance the RDNA4 announcements from everything else.

Or they've still got a lot of RDNA2/3 stock they want to get through. No sense in announcing anything that's still months away that might hurts current sales.

No, they just had too much to present, end of it.
People who project their desires onto AMD are totally inventing this. At no point whatsoever RDNA 4 was on the menu for Computex. I've only seen people hopium about it here.

Maybe. Though I exp CT it wasn't the main reason bigger Navi parts were cancelled this gen, if they needed to use any fancy packaging capacity that's better used on higher margin products I can see that factoring into the decision too
Exact same reason we don't see HBM in consumer gfx since Vega.

Too little capacity and so much demand for it in the higher margin markets.

They share the underlying designs, they use the same ALUs FI, it s what is around that is adapted to the different tasks, FI rendering back end/GDDR controler for client and HBM controler for GPGPU that do not need the rendering part.
As well as the packaging constraints others have noted, tape out / testing / etc. resources are finite so I would expect gaming GPUs to be at the back of the queue anyhow.
