It wasn't that they were just shorting the stock, but actually, IIRC, the number of shorted shares was like 120% of all outstanding shares. Which is, I believe, illegal somehow.

That has been the way stock exchanges have operated since their inception. Legislators and regulators try to rein that it in with varying degrees of success. In the US we probably have one of the more effective regulatory schemes but is is still a casino and the house always win in the long run.Rules for thee, not for me mofo.
