Also the social democratic party in Denmark overtook the immigration and tough on crim policy from the right wing, and for that reason they're not well liked in the European social democratic group. So 80% of the parliament in Denmark supports a very strict immigration policy.The reasons for political drift to the right after such hard won movement to reason are in my opinion evolutionary. The use of language and it's capacity for abstraction turns thought into division. We evolved as prey that came down from the trees and carry primate features in our genes, and particularly reliance of a tribe to survive. The presence of a big cat or a snake etc would set us scrambling into the branches. Too much capacity to spook would leave us exhausted and susceptible to attack and too little would also leave us dead. The regulation of these two factors is associated with two sites in the brain, the right amygdala and the cingulate, the latter acting to suppress the fear generated by the former so as to allow emerging analytic brain capacity to function in judging actual risk.
The result of these two features of the human mind, and again in my opinion, mean that the nature of the environment affects the development of those areas of the brain and the thinking style corresponding to them. Peer revied science has shown that stress and alcohol will cause people to become more conservative than when such things are abscent whereas people become more liberal when they feel self secure.
But owning to the imaging power of language based thought we can imagine pretty much anything and when told as children we are worthless we can be made to feel that. It's not easy to be liberal when you hate yourself.
As mentioned above, Denmark is showing less drift to the right because people are pretty happy with their political system and thus altruistic, think socialistic politically. There is little doubt, IMO, that a society that strives for the welfare of all of its people and that is visiably tangable, is a win win society which is also why in a winner take all capitalistic society the winners stay winners by inducing conservative fear. To be altruistic, to practice socialism only means that somebody else is going to eat your lunch and when you already hate yourself to begin with, that lie is easily swallowed. What evidence has a person in a capitalist society ever seen?
All over the world the poor and downtroden seek to move to the West and these days the people who live there already feel and are told they are under great threat. If it isn't immigrants its inflation or environmental catastrophe, whatever the parinoid mind can conjure. We have lost the capacity for the joy of being. Without joy there is little but envy and hate.
And the last thing people want to know is their inner misery.
We need wisdom to know what the real issues are and real movement to address them.
Well to be fair I suspect you in Europe are a lot more flooded with refugees (Africa, Syria and Ukraine all generating them) than we are in the US. Remember that here in the US the mouth breathers that watch Faux News consider anyone speaking Spanish an immigrant, despite nearly all the Southwest originally being Spanish colonies and Puerto Rico being a US territory.
