"A teenager who tried to return a malfunctioning replica gun that shoots plastic projectiles to a sporting goods store in Washington state was shot to death by an off-duty security guard who believed the boy was holding a real gun and planned to rob the business, according to authorities.

[...]

Police said Myers then pointed the gun issued to him for his security job at the teens and told them to put their hands in the air. Meeghan Black, a Renton police spokesperson, told CBS that the teenagers immediately complied and tried to explain their gun was not real.

But Black said Myers fired several shots after claiming “the confrontation intensified … rapidly”, hitting and killing 17-year-old Rohani.

Police said Myers stood over Rohani and continued to shoot, which he claimed he did because he believed one of the teen’s companions was reaching for a gun in Rohani’s waistband.

[...]

Investigators said security footage, which has not been publicly released, contradicted Myers’ statements to police, leading to his arrest. Authorities also said Myers is not a law enforcement officer and therefore “has not been trained in how to safely prevent crime” despite his employment as a security guard."

^^^ No words.

There should be extensive training and strict psychological evaluations of security guards and harsh penalties for companies who hire idiots or psychopaths and issue them guns. Too late for that kid but it sounds to me like that guard was itching to kill someone.

PS: Banning guns won't take them out of the hands of security guards or other forms of law enforcement. Of course it is difficult for people full of self hate to be able to spot psychopaths since they have the same disease and the same motivated avoidance seeing it.

All went according to the NRA plan.

Do we have confirmation that the gun is safe and receiving appropriate care and therapy?
Yes, the gun has been relocated to the evidence room, and is part of a therapy group of firearms that have also been used in felonies.

I have a snippet of conversation from the gun's therapy group:
So what you in for?
Took out a teenager.
How many shots?
5.
How long did it take for him to die?
Not long, 3 minutes
.
You know we are all so jealous you were actually able to fulfill your designed purpose!
Yea, it made me feel ... complete.

Shootings are not uncommon. People are afraid of guns. Carrying anything lookalike in the open, and I am not surprised a guard shoots first and asks questions later.

This is the blood price of having an armed society. Of having a second amendment.

Those are problems when they are features of an unnecessarily sick society. Otherwise, not so much.

The man arrested in the killing, 51-year-old Aaron Myers, told police that he was not working at the time he shot and killed Hazrat Ali Rohani, who was returning a malfunctioning airsoft gun to the Big 5 store in Renton. But he had offered to keep watch due to alleged rising crime in the area.

Renton has become something of a crime-ridden shithole...like much of the Seattle metro area.

No one wants to ban guns. That's the fallacy that gun nuts spread. By repeating it, you are helping to spread this fallacy.

What sane people want is gun laws that educate gun owners about gun safety. What sane people want is an evaluation of the person who will own a very very very dangerous weapon, to hopefully prevent incidences like this one.

In new court filings, police noted the 51-year-old suspect was an off-duty, armed security guard. Despite having no authority to conduct security services at that specific location, police said the suspect told them he offered "overwatch" at the strip mall because of rising crime in the parking lot there.

Unbelievable. Giving me Kyle Rittenhouse vibes here.

I find your posts to be full of moral character. Here, however, you are factually quite wrong. The gun threads in this forum are full of people who want to ban all guns or certain kinds of them. I am all for rational gun control. The folk I disagree with are the ones who want a total ban and for one main reason. Those who want a total ban have roused the indignation of gun owners, most of whom want the same tighter regulations, but the teetotalers freaked them out and created massive resistance and distrust so that nothing can now get done. Democrats lose votes when they push for banning guns because self defense is instinctual and they are pushing against morality that is built into our genes. Gun banners with all their statistical data and heads in clouds so called rational thinking can't understand basic human nature. They may as well argue that people can die having sex so that too should be banned.

JFC, I have that garbage blocked but there was as comment about "banning guns"? Who the hell would look around the country and think we are moving in the direction of "banning guns"? If anything, it would be less surprising if owning a gun became mandatory in certain states, like TX and FL. Gun laws have been relaxed, like in FL they made it easier last year to get a concealed permit, and it wasn't difficult. There are recent "stand your ground" laws that make it easier to shoot people if you perceive yourself to be in danger.

Reminds me of Christians bleating about how their faith is "under attack", or white men complaining that life is unfair now to them.

I happen to think the 2nd amendment is complete idiocy from a far distant and more primitive age that has no place in a modern society, but I have no illusion that it will ever go away and don't make gun rights/laws a big deal when voting. The war is lost IMO, we are a gun nut country and there are other issues to fight that are ongoing.

It's amazing the mental knots people tie themselves in out of fear their toy collection will be taken away by men in black. Hell wasn't Obama supposed to do it? Yet you still have them, amazing.

I hope that fucking vigilante moron regrets his action for the rest of his long life behind bars, though if that was in FL he'd probably be released and given a commendation by Desantis. Way to throw your own life away and that of another for nothing, to help prevent perceived theft of material items worth not even a fraction of a human life. It's people like this making the world dangerous more than the thieves.

Did you pay attention to the details? He wasn't a guard for the sporting goods store, he was in the area because his son was at martial arts lessons, he was off-duty. This is the price of allowing propaganda to have free reign in the media, the price of deregulation, the price of doing away with the fairness doctrine. I'm kinda leaning towards "fuck you" for just sort casually hand-waving that this is simply the way things are, and not the way things have been made to be, and pretending the NRA's shift from a sporting hobby group to a gun worship group isn't a factor.

This asshole was, like many gun worshipers, just looking for someone to give him a reason.

The teens complied with Myers' commands, "putting their hands in the air and placing the airsoft pistol he’d seen on the ground, and telling him it was just a 'BB gun,'" prosecutors wrote.

Myers had pinned one boy, identified in documents only as B.A., to the ground. At some point, Rohani attempted to back away from the confrontation, his hands still in the air. That's when officials say Myers fired multiple shots at Rohani, hitting him once in the side and six times in the back.

"Rather than calling 911 or waiting for any evidence at all that could confirm or deny his assumption, he claimed he had a 'duty to intervene' and did so. The defendant exited his vehicle, pointed his own very real firearm at the three teenagers, and rapidly approached them," court records state.

Court documents also reference an incident in March 2022, during which Myers "followed a person carrying a metal object that he believed to be a gun from one store, through another store, and away from the second store, all because he may need to 'intervene' and he 'might have to shoot' the person." In that instance, law enforcement officers intervened before anyone was hurt.

When you imagine yourself to be a hammer everything looks like a nail.

I know too many of these people. Every year we'd have an "active shooter" meeting (and how fucked is it that we have to have those), a few nuts at work would argue with campus security because they wanted to bring their piece in. Security said nope, we prefer to be the people with guns around here...thank the stars as far as I'm concerned.

Let's hope justice prevails and this particular psycho criminal is put away. Imagine throwing away your life when you have a son...all for a fucking fantasy where you'll be the hero stopping the theft of some cheap goods. What a sick way of thinking.
