Hey all,
I have a x370 Taichi Motherboard + 1800x CPU + RX 580 8GB GPU with 32GB of DDR4 3200 RAM
I'd like to do one last update before jumping to the AM5...? Does it make financial sense?
If so, I'd like to aim to spend no more than $300ish on CPU + $500ish on new GPU.. possibly bump RAM to 64GB? Would like to stay AMD on the GPU side of things. I'm not in any urgent hurry but honestly do not know when next GPUs will be coming out? CPUs look to mainly be AM5 that have been announced...?
Thoughts?

What do you use the PC for, and is it "slow" in any specific areas?
Without knowing your use cases and goals, I don't think it makes a lot of sense to drop ~ $900 on CPU/GPU/RAM .

It could make sense to try to score a deal on a GPU, and pair it with a 5700X3D; if you're trying to upgrade to 1440p gaming without breaking the bank.

Zen 5 is launching next month. I'd rather put $900 towards a new build. If your system is still doing everything you need it to, that could even be Zen 6 in about 2 years.

As mentioned, the 5700X3D would be a great CPU upgrade. However, since your board is an older AM4 board, it only supports PCIe gen 3, so higher tier GPUs will be limited somewhat in performance. If you can wait for a Zen 5 3D chip and a new build that might be the best thing to do, unless you want to upgrade your system now so that you can enjoy it and maybe keep a backup system once the new build is done.

As for the GPU, for the current board, you could grab a 6700XT if you can find a good deal, which usually these cards are great bang for buck, but I probably wouldn't go beyond that unless you know you will use the GPU on the next AM5 system. As for a GPU for AM5, something along the lines of a 7800 XT up to a 7900 XTX would be fine, if the budget allows.

I did a 7900x/x670e/a380/32gb for what you're planning on spending.

Repurpose the existing setup as a nas or something and start over with current tech. The only difference with the 870 boards will be mandatory USB4 ports. The current am5 boards will run 7/9 series CPUs.

I have a 6950xt that's running at 8x 3 (rather than the 16x 4 it could) and it benchmarks at around exactly where it should so I'm not sure that's a massive problem.

I think a 5700x3D ($200 or so) or a 5600 ($130) could be a solid upgrade, along with a modern GPU. Depending on what you use it for, you'd probably be able to get another few years out of it.

The PCIe3.0 thing is really only a big issue if you are going with a budget card that has cut down lanes. I remember when I was looking at the RX6600 (8 lanes, PCIe 4.0), it was a 3% loss at most running it on a PCIe 3.0 board. And the cards with a full 16 lanes don't suffer nearly as much.

I'd like to someday do some home video editing, which is why I got the 1800x in the first place. I have a ton of VHS that I'd like to get put onto Blu-ray backups / External HDD backups. Also handbrake, etc. as I was hoping to do a home NAS dealio with all my physical media. The GPU never was high end so I never pursued playing a ton of games other than Counter Strike, haha. SecondLife, for example tortured the computer.

Trying to find the reasoning why people suggest the 5700X3D* over say a 5900X
*some of the reviews I've read are fairly old...?*

Current setup has two LG 34UM69G-B 34-Inch 21:9 UltraWide IPS Monitors but they're pretty dated it would seem ( resolution wise & refresh wise ) 2560x1080 75HZ
I use them typically for stock market analysis & reading news. ( Only use one for gaming )

I'm open to building completely new, just not sure if worth upgrading this computer or not.
I know my old Intel build years ago, I managed to mod the mobo into accepting a server grade CPU

Because they game.

The A380 I mentioned would be great for converting things by using QSV it keeps the speed up and the CPU down.

Depending on the resolution and codec I can run video files through at over 1000 fps. With your other statements maybe just adding the A380 for video and convert it to a nas box would be sufficient to do what you want. Just add some more storage for your collection and leave the rest alone. I just RDP into mine to run files through and then move them to the folders I want them in.

Then, build something new for whatever you want to focus on since the nas/video server will be done. Not much of a stretch on budget considering the costs. GPU upgrade if wanted would be the biggest ticket item if you want to game with higher tier titles. Even then you can get 12gb cards for $250 IIRC.

Is it worth the cost to upgrade? Really, only you can make that call. Yes, some things will be limited, but you have a wide assortment of “modern” CPUs to choose from.
