My take. Biden seemed old, frail, and senile. Trump appeared 20 years younger, even though only 3. But i’d rather an old drooling man be POTUS than any current Republican. 4 more years of inaction would be preferable to another Trump disaster.

Biden needs to recover from his cold and then get back in front of the camera with that SOTU energy.

That's what everyone was hoping for this time around. I guess we should remember that address was the one after Biden had been chastised for being low energy. Maybe we'll see a repeat of that, still a lot of time before the election. Things change.

What won't change? Trump's criminal record, his unfitness for office, as per the 14th Amendment. Hell a bedridden Joe Biden who can't even speak or walk is preferable to a traitor and insurrectionist, one running to keep his worthless ass out of prison. Russian assets, convicted felons and rapists have no business being in the Oval Office. Have some fucking self respect America.

If I'm not mistaken this is the lowest viewership in a quarter century for a first debate. When our population was lower by some 60 million people.

- Not really surprising. Nothing really new here, not like we're "meeting" either of these candidates for the first time.

I'm normally pretty in tune with this stuff and it wasn't until I got to my evening veg that I realized the debate was today and I missed it. Guess because it was a CNN only thing (Instead of the usual CPD hosted thing), other news networks and most people just missed the memo.

Maybe a surprise to the pollsters who found high (like aliens landing high) interest in the debate.

Bigger picture to me this indicates two main possibilities or a combination of them: 1) turnout is going to fall dramatically from 2020 2) way more people have actually already decided than surveys indicate.

Guys debates don't matter. They just don't. They never have. The last important debate was probably Kennedy Nixon honestly.
Find any other debate that looked anywhere near that bad. It matters because instead of alleviating the biggest concerns against him, he spent 90 minutes confirming them.

Trump really did have a bad performance too.

Trump: "So, I want absolutely immaculate clean water and I want absolutely clean air, and we had it. We had H2O. We had the best numbers ever. And we did – we were using all forms of energy, all forms, everything. And yet, during my four years, I had the best environmental numbers ever. And my top environmental people gave me that statistic just before I walked on the stage, actually."
Of course he did, but Biden took the focus away from that crazy town and put the spotlight on himself being old. Also Republicans are the default in this country, if everyone dislikes all the choices the Republican will always win.

That's because the republicans are a far right wing party while the democrats are not at all a left wing party, they're center right. Can't expect the left to fall in line to a party way right of their beliefs.
But you can always expect them to shoot themselves in the dick and then complaining about it.

“The President had an off night so I’m now voting for the convicted felon.”- said no rational person ever.
Yes, because the American voting public is known for their extreme rationalism. That is why Kerry won in 04 and Hilary in 16 and why Biden won 400 electoral votes in 2020.

That’s true in OK and TX where you and I live, but not in every state. It will still come down to a half dozen purple states.

It was a bad performance by Biden and it will have a small negative effect on voter sentiment, but for the same reason a good performance by Biden wouldn’t have guaranteed anything for November neither does a bad performance.

Basically the biggest thing to help or hurt Biden will be whatever is in the news cycle the last week or two before the election - See Comeys October surprise.

I think it's the default a lot of places, look at all the red state legislatures and governors. But definitely for president with the EC, Republicans are the default.

Trump very often lies... but I dont see how people think Biden tells the truth. Just to name a few from last nights debate:

-Border Patrol endorses me... and the border has fewer crossings than when Trump was in office
-$200 cap on overall drug spending in Medicare
-unemployment was at 15% when i took office
- Trump told Americans to inject some bleach during covid

Biden was unbelievably bad. He was incoherent. He could not stay on topic. He missed so many opportunities to show what a horrible person Trump is it is mind boggling.
He didn't need a stellar performance. He didn't even need an average performance. All he needed was to not be abysmal.

He needs to bow out of the election and let someone else run. Let it be Kamala with him being the Vice President. Or basically anyone else.

He has no chance in the 2024 election. Even if he somehow turns a 180 in the next debate it won't be enough. Anyone who says he should keep going after last night is just enabling the failure of the Democratic party.

I haven't ever voted for a Republican for president, and I won't start now, but my vote doesn't matter. Only the swing states matter, and Biden has to establish a track record of success and a better alternative to Trump's new plan to win the election. No one that saw the debate last night could reasonably expect Biden to accomplish anything at all if he is elected.

I've had a chance to watch.

Biden could not have done any worse minus collapsing on stage. He was rambling, incoherent, mixed up topics in the same sentence (immigration/abortion) and had virtually nothing to punch back at Trump. Binden's worst moment when he missed a chance to pummel Trump over him claiming Putin told him about a dream to invade Ukraine. I suspect Zelensky is shitting his pants today because if Trump wins he will hand Ukraine over to Russia by cutting off aid.

Trump did nothing but lie the entire time which makes it easier vs having to remember the truth. That's why when law enforcement investigates the ask the questions over and over to see if the story changes. I counted over 27 lies with a few exaggerations sprinkled in. Most worthy lies of note...

Democrat states have abortion after birth
Pelosi turned down 10K troops for the capital
Pelosi ADMITTED she turned down troops (There is a video recording proving all that is a lie)
Biden made up claim Trump called fallen/captured soldiers suckers and losers. His former Chief of Staff John Kelly admitted Trump said it. He was in the room.
NATO was going out of business before he came into office
US has provided more aid to Ukraine vs Europe
US currently has the biggest deficit ever (that happened under Trump)

Can anyone name ANYTHING of substance claimed by Trump that was true?

Having said all that previois incumbant Presidents have lost debates before. I think this one is different because Biden had one objective, to show people he is not too old for the job nd he failed miserably.

Let the hand wringing begin. I'm sure we will all have discussions as where to go from here. Whatever the final decision it needs to happen sooner vs later. This version of Biden will cause people to stay home and that will be a win for Trump. MAGAts are rabid and they would vote for him even if he was caught red handed raping an 8 year old girl.
Good honest take, along with others here who've shared a similar sentiment. Although I don't have four-alarm fires going off in my head, it's wild that some people here are claiming Trump also sucked because he lied a lot. If one guy's performance was a "disaster," then the other guy won unless he was also a disaster.

Honestly, I've never seen Joe Biden look this bad during his entire presidency. So either he truly is being hidden from us in plain view; or he had a really, awful bad night. Starting off with a raspy voice is one thing, but he lost his train of thought numerous times and couldn't collect himself enough to recover.

I know it's not his style, but Joe couldn't even get himself to say "I beat you in 2020 fair and square, and I will do it again in November." The worst part of all this is Biden prepped hard for this debate.

Last night, Vox explained that the only way Dems run a different ticket is if Joe Biden releases his pledged delegates. I don't know his inner circle well, but I imagine only Dr. Jill Biden or Barack Obama could possibly deliver that message to Joe. But think about it, if last night's Joe Biden is reality, his wife would have known this a long time ago. So would former president Obama. Why would they wait until the end of June to have that conversation, imperiling the country in the process?

Even the NYT's columnist Paul Krugman has joined the "chorus' asking Biden to step aside (and Krugman loves Biden). I honestly don't know where to go from here. I'm convinced that both Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris would lose to DJT in a general election. So that leaves Gretchen Whitmer, or maybe mayor Pete. The alternative to "dancing with the one you came with" doesn't look great at this stage of the game.

Sure he had a few weird moments, but the bar is very low for DJT (remember the first debate in 2020 where he was an unhinged madman?). Even his handlers were worried he'd go off script; although Trump tried to attack Hunter Biden, overall he performed "well" by his standards. You, I and others here can tell the lies from the truths but we aren't the vast ocean of low-information voters out there. Trump was effective in peddling a simple, consistent message that Biden did not effectively counter because Biden was ineffective all night (yes, he finally started to warm up after about 20 minutes but he never really had any great moments. His closing statement was a dud.)

Low info voters aren't gonna fact check this thing. They only know what they saw, and some of them will also believe that the U.S. is a crumbling wasteland and DJT is here to save us from the migrants.

Trump very often lies... but I dont see how people think Biden tells the truth. Just to name a few from last nights debate:

-Border Patrol endorses me... and the border has fewer crossings than when Trump was in office
Border crossings in May of 2024 were lower than their peak under Trump in May of 2019 before COVID basically stopped them. I think this is misleading but it's not entirely wrong.
-$200 cap on overall drug spending in Medicare
This is a pretty clear misstatement as the cap is $2,000 and he frequently talks about it being $2,000.
-unemployment was at 15% when i took office
I mean unemployment was 12% when Biden took office which is pretty close.
- Trump told Americans to inject some bleach during covid

While Trump didn't literally say inject bleach he said this:
And then I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.

So not inject bleach, just inject disinfectant!

Overall seems like half of those Biden was basically correct on, one was a misstatement, and one was misleading.

Anecdotally speaking, based on my social news sources, every single comment was that Biden didn’t look good and every single comment that spoke about their vote, not a single one said they would change who they were going to vote for based on this debate. Most comments were of the type that Biden could be in a coma and they still wouldn’t vote for Trump.

Biden didn’t do himself any favors but neither did Trump.
