Looks like he killed a far superior being. If that bear wasn't attacking people, it shouldn't have been killed.

To be clear I am not disagreeing whether the bear paw is real or not or whether the bear should have been killed but just that the paw is not as large as the photograph lets on.
Here is a short video on how in LOTR they used this forced perspective technique to help convey the size difference between Gandalf and Frodo in the Hobbit house.
