Summer Olympics - I've always wanted to ask this Q:

I remember during the Phelps' hay day, my friend made a comment, "How come swimming has 100+ events where you can win gold over and over in variations?"

Soccer and tons of other sports only have 1 medal to fight for.

It's impossible for some athletes to be a 5-gold medal champ.

Class warfare. When the modern Olympics were conceived, swimming pools were for the elites while any schmuck could run after a ball.

I think simply because there are a number of different swimming techniques, each challenging in their own way. It's similar to gymnastics -- balance beam, floor routine, vault, parallel bars, uneven bars, etc -- many different techniques and skills.

Soccer is just soccer. Basketball is just basketball. Unless they want to introduce All-Start week competitions (3pt, dunk, etc).

I too have always had that complaint. Take one event (swimming), make many variations of it, make many distances of each variation, and then add relays in as many combinations as you want. Result = tons of medals. Track and field has similar effects. 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, etc. Standard running, hurdles running, speed walking, steeplechase running. Relay versions of all of the above track events. It makes medal counts as pointless as they are: pointless.

I liked the evaluation of Katie Ledecky last night on the Olympics coverage here. She swims her event 1.9% faster than the next fastest human on record. That is what really matters: how much better are you than anyone else at your event. Not how many medals you get.

Somewhat agree. If you watch the gymnastics routines enough, you see there is more overlap than you think. Virtually all moves on beam are also done on the floor. The dismounts on any event are all similar to a vault. But, they do make enough variations between events to make them separate.

Basketball does have 3-on-3 in the Olympics. So there is more than one possible basketball medal there. Soccer has several medals too (men's/women's versions of both outdoor and indoor).

And one could argue that soccer, rugby, basketball, hockey, handball, flag football, etc. are all just variants of the same overarching "teams get the ball\puck through a hoop\goal in a rectangular field" game. Thinking about it that way, they combined have a lot of medals just like swimming. We just don't call the various swimming "get your body through water" races different sports.

Along these lines, I've always wanted more than 4 gymnastics events for women. The men get 6.

I'd prefer to see 3pt, dunk, etc. instead of breaking, and I hate basketball.

Soccer archery.

It's regular soccer, but the goalies have a bow and can shoot at players.
Who needs red cards anymore.

The meta game would be crazy. They'd rarely go past the center field and probably try go for long shots.

You mean there is something to be excited about other than a player got close to maybe possibly getting a chance to attempt to shoot a goal? Wow, you just made soccer something to consider watching!

Now you can tell when they're acting or not based on the bleeding and the penetration.

Oh, they are never acting. The rules should be changed so that players are immediately removed from the game for the rest of the game for their safety if they happen to fall down.

Sports that requires short time and little space, can have more disciplines, while the larger cannot.
