Well after a long streak of launching in October, the new Pixel will launch in August, probably to be closer to the iPhone launch, which is smart. Starting with the 9 series the Pixel will have three phones at launch, PLUS a new FOld. The Pixel 9, a smaller phone with less features/cameras. And then a Pixel 9 pro and pro XL. Now the high end features and cameras will all be in a smaller sized phone as well as the larger model. Until now if you wanted a smaller phone, you'd have to miss out on the pro features, especially the upgraded cameras. Ultrasonic FP sensor. There should be a Pixel 9a as well down the road.

I was tempted to wait for the 10 as that chip will be TSMC, not Samsung. But after thinking about it and reading, it will still be a first gen product. I'm not so worried about TSMC, but more about Google having issues with new 1st gen hardware. So I'll get the 9 Pro, not the XL, as I do want a smaller phone with the top cameras. I'll see how the 10 fares after people have had them out in the wild for a bit. Some details here

Exactly what I've been waiting for- smaller size with all the cameras. Usually at launch, there are some really good deals with crazy trade-in values, etc.

WTF Google! Why would you do this? That camera island is hideous.

They are trying to be more like Apple, and it's not for me either, but it will be in a peak design case all the time so it's certainly not a dealbreaker. Apple has a similar raised curved look on their cameras, just arranged in a different way.

TBH that looks nothing like an iPhone to me!

I dont like that the camera island sticks out so much and it looks way too big. I don’t use cases on my phones so its definitely a no from me.

It is similar to the iPhone except the iphone cameras stick out even further than the surrounding metal and are in a square shape. this is very similar but in a straight rectangle shape. Instead of having the camera lenses stick out further, they had the surrounding lip come up all the way. It's definitely iPhone inspired.

I liked the way it is now but with the upgrades, I'm on it.

Its more like a rounded camera island from an S20 rotated 90°. I sort of liked the one on the Pixel 8 but also wished that they'd made that less protruberant as well. At least that was a distinct design though.

The general consensus in the pixel forums are they don't like it, but, most people therereact negatively to change at first. I'll have to see it in person but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Yeah, promo pictures don't often show reality, and if you are going to use a case it'll probably make the back flush.

Yeah, maybe 1% of people don't put a case on their 1000.00 phone so the case design is probably more important. I've always wondered why they don't just make the phones with sufficient protection right from the start.

I know only one person in my circle of friends that goes commando with their phone, it is much rarer to see in person.

I have always used a case - but since discovering the Peak Design case and it's awesome magnetic mount accessories, such as on bikes and in cars, is just amazing. And the case is relatively sleek for the protection it gives. My phones have had some really hard landings in their cases - never an issue once.

I work in on a hospital ward (which is only relevant because I see lots of people's phones lying around on tables) and phones without cases are not that uncommon.
I've not used a case on mine since I had a galaxy edge s7 (which is a few years ago)!
Glass screen protector and a leather skin on the back and all mine have been fine and I'm pretty clumsy!

My pixel with the all glass back is like holding an ice cube. It would have been destroyed the first week I had it without a rubberized case.

Which is why I like a leather skin on mine. It's grippy, looks nice and doesn't add bulk.
It does make you wonder why they use glass if they are expecting everyone to cover it up though!

I am so ready for a pixel 9 pro that's not as big as the 8 pro but not as small as a small phone. If people want a big phone, there is the 9 pro xl. That's gonna be my favorite part. Plus some upgraded cameras as always, it's my primary shooter lol

The island is nothing like Apple, the overall phone shape, yes. I like the island shape better, you can put this on a table and type without the phone wobbling around, that's one thing that I hate on all phones that are not stable like that.

With the shape, I hate them copying Apple, it eats a lot of corner estate, but hey, that I can forgive. I'm not too keen about the G4 performance, but considering I'm satisfied with my current Snapdragon 865, then, the G4 might be OK for 3-4 years.

After holding one in hand, I might decide if this will replace my 2021 Oppo...

These huge camera islands are ruining the look of new phones. It continues the trend of Apple doing something and every competitor copies them. Bring back sleek phones!

Hoping they have a really good deal for the launch. For the P8 they boosted trade in values quite a bit for older pixels. My P6 is getting glitchy so I probably need to find a new phone before it has a major problem. Currently, the light sensor is going bad, I think. In dim light it sometimes won't brighten the screen and it won't wake up when I pull it out of my pocket unless I push the button on the side. But its been a good phone overall except the reception has never been very good... so, maybe not that great a phone, lol.

Rumor goes that it might be similar to Samsung, where you get a 'free' capacity upgrade if you preorder. So Google might be stingy and start out at 128GB, but that might not matter if you order early enough.

Yeah doesn't look like it will be that great of a preorderbonus this year. Who gives a shit about the crap gemini AI for a year shit, and the memory upgrade would only be 100 bucks - no free pixel watches this year.

The deals will get better closer to Christmas I predict... If you don't really need a new phone, I'd wait for BF or Christmas deals. I agree about the AI stuff. It's not going to change how I use my phone.

Black Friday is always good, but one thing to also consider, is that the trade-in values are almost always much better at launch, and by November, the trade in values go way down. I'll see what the trade in values are on Tuesday. If they are great for an 8 pro, I'll get a 9 pro 256GB, but I'll wait until Black Friday for a 45mm watch. I really want the smaller form factor the most, I've always wanted a smaller sized pro, but not as small as the pixel 5.

absolutely shitty pre-order bonus, that bullshit Gemini plus for one year. But, $699 trade in for the P8P 256GB, and plus the google store credit of 200, which I will use towards the watch, the P9P 256GB will cost me like $250 - worth it for the smaller size alone. The 9's all have a newer modem, more efficient. also the pros have a vapor chamber for cooling.

Best deal out there right now is T-Mo. 799 for the 256 P9 and 500 trade in for my P6. That is a 2 yr deal at 12.50/mo if you have one of their magenta or other upper tier plans. Mine is a 55+ plan, so 50/mo. Decent deal due to the good trade in. All the other carriers are 3 yr plans to get a decent discount or trad in.

I can get the P9 pro XL for $269.99 through my jobs verizon business account. My phone is not upgrade worthy until October but I can use a buddy upgrade from another line. I just may go for it.
