Question Any compelling reason to upgrade from a 3080 to 4080/90?

I haven't been keeping up the brisk moving GPU industry, but is there a good reason to upgrade from a 3080?

Thanks!

Depends on the game you are playing & the settings. If no pressing urgency then waiting yields newer cards and/or better prices

Ah, been playing mostly Elden Ring & DLC, Lies of P, Lords of the Fallen and now Black Myth Wukong. Prior the BMW, I've been able to play all those games on max settings albeit with RT off with FPS at or over 60 consistently. However, with BMW, I'm no longer able to do so, and have read some with the newer 4080s & 4090s being able to run the game with max settings even with RT on at around greater than 60 FPS.

I'm assuming we'll be seeing more games with the UR5 engine? At least, for the games I'm only interested in playing, the Soulslike games. Generally, in my view, the ideal time to buy is when they introduce and focus on the next generation. Any idea when that would be? I suppose, once they introduce the 5000 series, the 4000 series should offer some better price points.

5000 series
It's coming soon as it's being talked about in news releases. There are some other cards out though with insane amounts of RAM if you look outside of the consumer stuff. Then again it comes down to the chips as well.

BMW is UE5 Nvidia version with hardware Lumen

By contrast Senua's Saga Hellblade 2 is standard UE5 with soft lumen

Keep in mind nvidia will always sponsor games that make their future gen cards look good. BMW will probably max out a 6090 / 6090 ti etc. without DLSS. If you are ok with DLSS then you can try 4090

Wow, a $1500 GPU is no longer adequate? Currently, I'm running BMW with FG off, RT off, settings on very high except for a few (vegetation), and on a 4k (well, 3.8K widescreen). The game runs mostly at around 60 FPS.

I've yet to try SWO, but I have seen some reviews. From my untrained eye, the graphics strikes me as underwhelming and perhaps it would look much better on a PC? Because it sure looks like crap on a PS5.

Ok, looks as if the 5 series is most likely to be introduced in Q4 or Q1 of next year. Assuming vendors will reduce the 4080 to ~ $700 - $800, will definitely pick one up to replace my 3080. May consider just building a new system to adopt the 7800X3D--my PCs are purely for gaming, nothing else. If not, may just wait until Fromsoft's new game before upgrading, and just have the PS5 Pro hold me over.

Am I missing anything?

IMO, unless you are unhappy with performance in the games you are playing now, or can't play a game you want to get, then there isn't much point upgrading.

I would never upgrade because some future game might be too much. Upgrade when that game is actually here and you want to play it.

Delay works in your favor.

Lowering the settings a notch or two is unlikely to yield much visual difference and will give better performance. I think HardwareUnboxed might have some recommendations for that...

Having had a 3080 prior to my current 4080 I would not recommend the incremental upgrade as you will still be unimpressed with it if trying to use max settings on BMW. Heck, even a 4090 will struggle with max settings on BMW. But it's like Crysis was back in the day - entirely pointless to try to max out other than as a tech demo.

Ok, this is very helpful!

I'm ok with RT off. Of course, all things being equal, I'd love to have it on, but not if it dips below 60fps. I've finished BMW with mostly ultra settings with shadows/vegetation on high with RT off. It was fine. With about 80 hours played, I didn't experience a single crash, frame degradation to the point where it hinders me (like Godrick in ER when he starts flaming with the dragon head), and the game was smooth and looked fabulous. There were only the intermittent stutters, which I suspect is an issue with the UR5 engine.

A game I have on deck to play is Space Marine 5. This is more CPU intensive than GPU? So, yeah, I may just skip the 4080 altogether.

In any case not worth buying a 4080 right now, so close to launch of 5070/RDNA 4/Battlemage. I expect the price of $500+ cards to crash in a few months when those cards launch

I'd probably stick with the 3080. Really solid card, particularly if you managed to snag it at MSRP before the mining boom and pandemic made everything ridiculous.

It might choke in more recent games if you're trying to run everything at 4K or 1440p with full RT effects, but it should handle 1080p max settings fine if you don't mind upscaling that to your display's resolution.

If you're willing to go with settings where the card will run well, I suspect you wouldn't really need to upgrade to until the 6000 series. If you do like being able to run a native resolutions and max settings I'd at least wait until Blackwell launches before upgrading.

I missed out on the initial GPUs & PS5s, because I just won't do business with scalpers under any circumstances. So, fortunately, a couple of years later when the Nvidia prices finally began to fall, I snagged a 12GB OC version on Newegg for ~$700 which included Doom Eternal & Ghostwire Tokyo.

I've been very happy with the card, and only ran into some issues with BMW. But, alas I've finished the game twice, and probably won't go into NG+ moving to other games instead.

My initial plan was the just get the PS5 Pro and do some console gaming (which I've missed) on my big TV until the time is ripe again for a new gen GPU.

Since you've got a 12GB 3080, I don't see a need to upgrade, or more specifically I'd wait for the 5000 series to drop before upgrading at least. What CPU are you using since you mentioned a 7800X3D as a possibility? I noticed a huge upgrade in gaming performance on my 4090 when I went from a 7700X to the 7800X3D.
