it turns on, all the fans work, but then it shuts off. I do have a PSU tester and I can try that, but not even posting and showing bios is a very bad sign.

Just quickly plug another known good PSU into main ATX power and CPU 12V+. Drives disconnected. I don't even 'install' the good PSU many times I just turn the chassis on its side and rest the PSU nearby on the outer edge.

But why would it keep power cycling if it was bad ? almost as soon as it powers off, it fires up again.

Specs are unknown for Civ7 so far. Civ6 recommended cpu is a 4th gen intel so, what you have. It will probably run but I would look toward a new am5 cpu unless on a tight budget going am4 5600 or maybe a 5700x3d. AM5 mobo platform and say a 7600 is best long term mid range option. You can probably stay with the 1060 for awhile.

Late game turn time on an old quad core will be a special kind of torture. One reserved for only the tightest of the tight wads.

I mean, you want the failure modes that could cause this on the input side, output side? I'm not an EE bro. OC or OV protection being tripped?

With a 5700X3D being US$150 from Aliexpress (or less if it's coupon time of month), I'd be pretty tempted to find someone selling an older AM4 system cheap and then do a CPU upgrade. Decide if you want to use the GPU in the AM4 system or your 1060, sell the extra CPU and your old system, and enjoy Civ7.

I know AMD is being bandied about. So to offer an alternative, what about this?
Can be had for US$275 right now with a limited time code.
Not too shabby.

But for AM5, it’s probably better to look to 7000 series SKUs for now/wait for some deals. That’ll future proof you more than 5000 series.
AMD is being bandied about as Intel is a power hog and a dead platform. Since he is in suck a budget mode, even a 7600x is $229 and while only 8 core, he only needs that.

Just presenting options, that’s all.

7600X isn’t a bad option if budget conscious I agree. And allows for a Zen 6 upgrade if it remains on AM5.
But if you’re holding onto it for 10 years (and still on a budget) and not worrying about upgrades like his previous build, then a 12900K will offer a lot more performance. Caveat to this, is this calc is omitting a variable such as electricity cost savings.

Problem there is you're only upgrade path is RPL as the socket change kills any option beyond that. No one wants a 13/14th gen RPL though with the issues coming from Intel. Maybe the microcode fixes some of them but, I suspect deeper issues than simple code revisions.
That’s fair. But that’s why I mentioned holding onto it for 10 years, and not upgrading. 😏

If you plan on going light early then heavy later yeah 7600X now and then Zen 6 higher end seems reasonable. I guess it really comes down to is how far do you want to future proof your set up.

He's running an 11 year old CPU and asking if he can keep it longer. While needs can always change, I'm not sure worrying too much about the upgrade path on the same platform is really a priority. Nice bonus maybe, but not worth getting too worked up about.

I never suggested that, but an 11 year old system needs to be retired, and right now AMD is the only thing that makes any sense to someone who wants a long running system, NOT Intel due to degrading issues and the like.

Sorry not replying to you specifically, just on the idea of choosing one path or the other based on nebulous "future proofing".
Chances are by the time OP upgrades again we'll be transitioning to DDR7 and AMD will be selling the R5 12400, so how much value an upgrade path has is questionable.

For OP specifically, if you find a great deal there's no harm in buying it, but you might just want to wait until next year when Civ launches to see reviews. Some strategy type games like Factorio show massive improvements with the larger cache, and Civ6 turn time bench is faster with a 5800X3D than a 7600X.

While many don't groove on AliExpress I know multiple people that ordered this 7500f and all give the purchase process and CPU the 👍

Ryzen 7500f under $130 shipped

Unbeatable value IMO. In 5yrs you will be able to put in a much faster CPU for under $100. Intel is no longer in the retail conversation for anyone other than the "I have always, and will always, only use Intel" folks. Arrow Lake should change that but I suspect pricing will be initially high for both the CPU and a decent board.

Isn't that one of the ones without the igpu? Makes sense if you have a GPU to take the place though I like a backup option if something stops working.

I suspect Intel might take a discount on ARL to regain some trust and move away from selling RPL in the same process. It's the last of the 10+++++++++ models and crapped itself. They're going to eat some costs with the extended warranty as well.

Yes sir, f is no iGPU. You can grab a decent slot powered LP display adapter for under $10 on Ebay if you need one for troubleshooting. The guys that are buying it on Ali told me you get a sweet coupon once a month that knocks another $15 or so off the price iirc. It's a lot of CPU for the money.

I would get the $399 7700X bundle with motherboard + 32GB DDR5 from Microcenter and use your graphics card until you can afford something faster. You can run the 7700X at 65w ECO mode with almost no performance loss if you want to limp along with your power supply. With regard to the power supply, I would sell it along with your old parts as a working system. Easier to offload that way and a decade old power supply is begging to fail in the next 5 years. Also, it's really limiting your choices down the road for upgrades. A good upgrade for graphics would be a used 3060 12GB for around $200 and you could probably get away with the 3060 + 7700X@65w with your current power supply. I'd consider that your best value upgrade and you can always drop in a CPU upgrade later if needed or wanted.

Edit: That's the combo (7700X, 32GB DDR5, and MSI 650 chipset motherboard) in my secondary system, and I had it previously paired with a 3060 12GB. It was a great extra gaming system. I got a nice bonus earlier this year and it's paired with a 4070 Ti Super 16GB now. Honestly, there's not much practical difference in gameplay (except maybe Cyberpunk 2077 with RT on) between the secondary system and the one in my signature.

I think I'm going to do this. (Bundle - There's too much stuff along the lines of the case, drives, etc. for me to think about replacing them and selling the full system. Also: Intel K series means no iGPU, so I'd need to sell my 1060 with the system) Do you have any thoughts about the 32GB version of the bundle vs. the 48GB version for $10 more? It would use this RAM: https://www.microcenter.com/product...sktop-memory-kit-f5-5200j4040a24gx2-fx5-black 5200 CL 40 seems like a decent downgrade from the 32GB version, which is 6000 CL 32, but as the car guys say "there's no replacement for displacement."

On a different topic, what are the thoughts on the Corsair RM750e as a PSU? If we're assuming that I've got an upper midrange CPU like the 7700x and a similar upper midrange GPU of say 300W or less, is there any reason to go bigger? I'd have a HDD or two and a couple SSDs. I may even drop in the legacy DVD drive that's still in the case. (I might have even used it as a DVD drive once since I upgraded from the Phenom 2 940 & AM2 board!) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BYR1BXC6/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1

EDIT: The Labor Day Sales are up. I can upgrade from the 7700X to a 9700X for $50 more, or a 7800X 3D (different board) for $150 more. All have the same two RAM options 32GB of fast-ish or 48 of slow-ish for $10 more. https://www.microcenter.com/site/content/bundle-and-save.aspx

Unless you *need* 48GB (unlikely) it is better to get the faster 6000 CL32 memory. Otherwise you are gimping your CPU >5% in a lot of tasks with the slower memory. If you have access to a Microcenter those bundles seem like fantastic deals.

As for the Corsair RM750e, I have one of them and it powered a 12600K/4080 Super rig without issue. It's a little noisier at high loads than the RM750x series, but I think it was $75 ish on sale (2024 pricing) so I can overlook that.

Many thanks for the advice to stick with 32GB. As for the options, does it make sense to splurge an extra $50 for the 9700x or $150 for the 7800x 3D?

It can give you room to grow but, otherwise it's not necessary. If you run into an issue later on you already have what's needed for them and can pull the CPU and drop the new one in. It shouldn't be a huge ordeal to swap them and might take you 10 minutes to do. Someone else will take the used CPU off your hands pretty quickly.

Only the "F" or "KF" models lack iGPU beginning with 8th Gen Coffee Lake. All 4th Gen Haswell (desktop) models came with iGPU.

Wow, 4670k is what I was using when Civ 6 came out in 2016! Since then, I've upgraded to 3600, 5800x, and (as of last week) 7800x3d.

Turn time is king in this game, and that won't change with Civ 7. By FAR the most impactful upgrade of those CPU's has been the 7800x3d. 3600 and even 5800x didn't feel that much different in terms of turn times and load times (Deity restarts FTW), but 7800x3d is crazy in comparison.

So in summary, I can give a strong recommendation for Civ games into the future with 7800x3d. If you factor in the time saved with waiting on turn times, investing in a better CPU is well worth it in my opinion.
