Question Ancient 2001 Lian Li PC60

Recently reused my Lian Li PC60 from so old ago. The model before they put an 80mm mesh fan mount on top. So I'm working with a sweet little case that has bad air flow. My only exhaust fan is the 80mm fan at the rear of the case and whatever my 1070 FE fan can vacuum out. The only creative way I can think of to improve the exhaust flow is a louder fan: pretty much no option for a quiet 80mm fan afaik, unless someone has a better idea?

The rig is a media rig and really doesn't get that warm. I can reduce the rpm speed of the fan but it really needs to pull out as much as possible being the case mounts the PSU right above the MB and the PSU is a fanless Seasonic 400w from 2009 Needless to say I need to extend the life of the PSU as much as possible unless I buy a new one so it's either find a creative way to improve the exhaust system of start looking for a PSU or new case, rrrr

Use bigger/more fans for intake and force air out the back w/o the 80mm in place.

Hmm, not bad.

Possibly use a 120mm to 80mm reducer; mount it on the outside of the case, hmm

With modern meshy cases I don't bother with exhaust fans anymore. I just pack them with intakes and let them force air out the back.

My current FD Torrent has dual 180's in the front and I might have added 1-2 120's if needed but since 3 sides are mesh there really isn't a chance for heat soak.

Do you have all of the 5.25 drives populated? You could remove the front covers and create some sort of intake there. Like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/175586940221?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28

I've used that trick with my 800D... I got a 140mm fan just sitting at the edge of the bay area with the 5.25" bay covers 'open' to allow air intake but the PC60's problem is the tiny 80mm exhaust fan in two fold.. the noise and lack of high volume air movement.

That's not a bad idea with the GPU slot covers, hmm

Well I'd run a test with and without the 80mm fan to see what my temps look like. If it doesn't change much then I'd just remove the 80mm altogether. Like Tech Junky said if you can get enough intake the hot air will work itself out of any vented area, with or without exhaust fans.

Man, that case brings back memories. I haven't seen one of those in ages.

If you have open PCIe slots you aren't using, you can probably get a PCIe slot cooling fan to stick in there. You could also get a 5.25" bay fan to stick in it as well that would work better if you either leave all the unused PCIe slot covers off or replace the unused ones with mesh covers.

your making me cry because i feel so old.... lol...

that was one of my favorate cases back in the days when they made them from alu, for weight reasons and not cost perspective.

I was like 'dude, it's aluminum, it'll cool faster!' lol

It must of been one of the first models for that line and actually my first case. Had some oxidization to it so i used some vinegar Windex and it cleaned up really nice. Installed the 9700X system in it.

What's some other good temp monitoring software other than HWinfo 64? Might be worrying over nothing

I like hwinfo the best. There's also hwmonitor. You could also try any fan control software as well as MSI afterburner.

So idle temps range from 40c to 45c given some light loads. Closed case, 74*f ambient. Is that about right for a 9700X? Have a NH-D15S on it

My 7700 with an AIO sits in the 40s at idle so I'd say that's pretty normal.

Alu cases vs the steel garbage we get now is like night vs day.

I remember we did a pinky test on cases, basically if you can lift it with ease with just your pinky, and be sturdy enough for you to sit on top of it, it was a well built case.

Then everyone went cost and went steel.
Now its rare to see any Alu made cases, and the ones that we do see, are at a very high premium.

I can appreciate how far cases have come over the decades. More focus on modern cooling systems, and air flow. The rarity also includes right sided, upside down motherboard, configurations. The only one I've seen that can do both is made by Be Quiet,, I think,, it's been a while since I looked but that seems like a pretty sweet option to check on the list, and I do like the Seasonic attempts at Cases, even with the proprietary strip they use for cable cleanliness.

If anyone has any case recommendations that would be cool. I think the heatsink needs a clearance of 6.5" I was dancing like when Elaine first appeared in season 4 from her vacation in Seinfeld when I found out the PC60 Case accommodated the NH-D15S, lol

I have one buried somewhere around here. Bought because it was aluminum and had a removable motherboard tray. Been a while since I used it, but I had the side panels off and a box fan blowing air over it.
