It's a Radeon 7700 XT with some boosts (better bus size). While we don't have any real-world data yet, what's the performance of this new AMD chip? Equivalent to an RTX 4050? 4060? 4070?

Roughly you could expect about the value of a 4060 Ti 16Go. A little above that even.
Here is test 4060ti vs 7700 vs 6800. I think more like 6800 with RDNA3 arch(same bus/CU/almost clockspeed/bandwith 500+)It's a Radeon 7700 XT with some boosts (better bus size).
What were they before?Haha GameStop also dropped their PS5 trade in values from what they used to be.
The PS5 is enormous for a console; it absolutely dwarfs even the original Fat PS3. It's the only console I have that I run vertical.Unsurprisingly, gamers aren't thrilled with the pricing scheme. LOL
I've been waiting for this launch for a couple of years and had every intention of buying it on launch day. At $699 with a drive (I don't care about the stand--I mean, you can lay it flat, right?), I'd pre-order it on Sept 26. Another poster brought up a salient point, at least in my case, that the pricing is only $80 above what I would've paid. Is it worth it to get it before Christmas, or just wait until the price falls (I'm betting it will) and inevitable value bundles.

But it's not $700, it's $780 if you want a blu-ray drive. Being able to play physical games is IMO the biggest advantage of a console over PC. It means I can get games on much better sales then you see digital for the first couple of years a game is out thanks to robust competition for physical game sales between Walmart, Gamestop, Best Buy, Amazon, Target, etc while PSN game prices are almost always high the first two years the game is out since it's a monopoly. It also lets me sell games when I'm finished with them, as I don't see the point of hoarding games I'll never play again (which is 90% of the games I finish).Ok, that's pretty good for a console, in my view.
I'm ok with $700, because it just makes the TV experience much better. Again, I'm sure many do it, but carrying my desktop to hook up with a TV is beyond my tolerance threshold. The Steam App to TV is fine, but we have input lag--die once to a boss because of it, and that's the end of that experiment.
I think $385 before the extra 25 you would get for being a pro subscriber. What were they before?
It's showing $385 for me if Pro, $350 if not. Would make it a $450 upgrade for me then: $25 to buy the Pro membership, $315 difference after trading in my current PS5 to make up the difference for the new console, $80 for the blu-ray drive, then $30 for the stand. No thanks for just a moderate gpu bump and some better AI upscaling. Then slap another $37 for sales tax onto it and I'm getting near $500.I think $385 before the extra 25 you would get for being a pro subscriber.
Also I've been reading the optical drive has been selling out on Amazon. I suppose those planning on getting one are thinking ahead.

This 100%.
Stop malding like entitled children. The PS5 is the standard product, every game will run on it. You want your PS5 games to run at double the framerate or have nice RT effects? Pay up.
Right cause a $700 7900 XT is the same power as a $700 1080 Ti.Eh, like graphics cards over the past 7 years or so, it is just proof there is no real advancement on price/perf but a stagnation or inflation of price and minimal performance upgrades or distractions like RT reflections and needed up-scaling tech..
My PC doesn't have an optical drive and hasn't needed one in 15 years.Don't forget to add in the multiplayer service costs for PS+ (min $80 usd/yr now) and the real cost is more than $700 USD or 800Euros if you want a disc drive and stand. So your comparisons look a lot more equal for the Pro vs 7700xt PC.
It doesn't make sense comparing PC to a console when it comes to physical media. PC has multiple platforms to buy titles, several discounts through steam sales and other platform sales throughout the year. Also steam refund policy is lax and easy to use whereas PSN refund policy is really strict. And also PSN most of the time you're going to be paying full price for titles whereas on PC I can always find a discount even with third party key sites or for example GOG.Right cause a $700 7900 XT is the same power as a $700 1080 Ti.

Irrelevant. My point still stands. A PC doesn't need it, so I'm not going to count it in the price if I'm never paying it.It doesn't make sense comparing PC to a console when it comes to physical media. Discs aren't just for resale, I can't be the only person who keeps many titles on a shelf just cuz.
Definitely true, but it's still way cheaper than buying digital. For instance, picked up Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth and Shin Megami Tensei V Vengeance for $30 each PS5 physical while Infinite Wealth has never dropped below $45 on PSN and SMT V has been a straight $60 on PSN. You'd have to wait at least two years to get those prices on PSN once nobody is buying the games anymore.I've found that the savings at retailers aren't what they used to be.
And I will count it in the price because being able to use physical media is absolutely critical to the value proposition of consoles for me. Without being able to sell my games when I'm done with them and without being able to take advantage of the competitive market for physical game sales a console is just all the downside of PC (eg not owning your games and paying more for them) with none of the upside of PC (eg better cpu even in budget segments, no generations to worry about, better VRR support).Irrelevant. My point still stands. A PC doesn't need it, so I'm not going to count it in the price if I'm never paying it.
Even the argument of "a console NEEDS an optical drive" is questionable. Some will swear by it, but I don't really mind at all. Maybe that's why I don't really care for consoles in the first place. Feels like a collector's item to me.

Hot deals on physical games all the time on sites like Slickdeals. You just need to strike while the deal is hot. I agree. I got my PS5 FF7+Intergrade for like $17 on a Walmart price mistake that I actually got, I seem to always miss on the B&M deals.Definitely true, but it's still way cheaper than buying digital. Maybe....You're not.
I will always have some of my favorite games on the shelf with a hard copy, and one of the main reasons I'm interested in the PS5 Pro is to play ER & DLC on my big TV. Of course, being my favorite game of all time, I want a hard copy of it to proudly display on my game shelf. It's the same with my favorite books where I have hard bound leather copies of them.
As to the $80 extra for an optical drive, it's $80 when it's all said and done. We all work hard for our $$ and ultimately how we choose to spend it is of course a highly personal decision. For me, is $80 worth playing ER on my large TV now vs waiting another 6 months?
I ain't gettin any younger and $80 doesn't seem like a big deal, at least not for me. I mean, I have to rebuy games anyway, which will all lead to way more than $80 bucks.
I guess I'm the opposite. I hate clutter and sell all my games if I'm not playing them again. Only exception is I keep the steelbooks for all the games I buy in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series because the artwork is incredible on them, but I still sell the game discs since they have no use to me on the shelf. Plus if I ever want to replay them those games are $5 all the time on Steam. You're not.

OF COURSE IT IS. 😂Just checked and this stand alone PS optical drive is now sold out? What? Bunch of gamers pre-empting the launch to buy the drive? Scalpers?
PS - Checked on Amazon.
