Jets look...well not exactly terrible but the Niners looked pretty damn good even without Run CMC. Purdy looked like, a completely different QB back there. Just super goddamn effective and strangely, I felt confidant in the guy more than I have before in a game. Not like there was a lot of reason not to, by now, other than just "that vibe" you get, but last night kind of erased that for me.

If they get CMC back healthy for the rest of the year, then damn. If Mason performs this well in substitution role throughout the year, especially if he's required to put in more time, then they are the team to beat after week 1.
Defense still has a few holes in it though.

Yes. I actually think the Jets looked pretty good, so I give that to them. I'm wondering if Jets are actually going to be a team to worry about this year (they probably should be), but it just showed how good SF is, from what I saw.

It's not like anyone in the NFL is going to be able to do anything about that strike from Rogers to Lazzar, so they will have these sort of things going for them. When healthy, Rogers is still gonna do his thing.

Yeah if dbag Rodgers stays healthy I think they'll do well.

They looked good and played well last night. Purdy looked a little off kilter at first but settled down. The throw to Aiyuk in the corner should have been caught, that's a result of not practicing in camp. That throw was a dime for sure. The defense held up for most of the game, but damn, Moody going like 5-5 is clutch. Game could've been much closer.

Purdy finished 4th in MVP voting a season ago. He was actually the front runner until the Ravens beat up on the Niners on SNF, vaulting Lamar Jackson into the top spot.

Granted you're talking about the eye test, which is different, but Purdy wasn't just a game manager last season. He balled out, and unless something really weird happens, he'll get close to the Dak Prescott contract extension after this season.

Football media is such a fucking clownshow. Think it was Yahoo's power rankings and it had a blurb about how Stroud very possibly is already the 2nd best QB in the entire league. He's good, but FFS what a ridiculous thing to say and unfair to him.

Especially noteworthy is there was talk of Watson being that a few years ago, now look at him, and Yahoo, had actually a salient article about how the on field performance let the Browns justify being ok with Watson, but now they might actually care since his on field performance isn't there.

Er, wasn't there like a 4 game stretch where he didn't just not ball out, he played poorly, not even "game manager" level. It might've just been one or two games of that, but I recall there being a stretch where the media was really hammering the "is Purdy holding back the 49ers?"

MVP is popularity contest shit and politics. I'd say Josh Allen is more important to the Bills success than Jackson is to the Ravens (because the latter has a more competent overall team, better coaching). And for the regular season, I'd say both are more important to their teams than Mahomes is. And yet, literally no one in the entire league, including Harbaugh no matter what that a-hole says, would take either of those guys over Mahomes in the playoffs, because well 3 rings to none. I think Purdy is less important to the 49ers success than any of those, He probably isn't even top 5 (Allen, Jackson, Mahomes, Hurts, Burrow), but probabaly in the mix for 5-10 with guys that are good but on teams that underperform (Chargers, Dolphins, Cowboys, Rams; I'd probably put him here at the moment) and not enough data (Stroud, Love).

Purdy will certainly get paid very well. And then the 49ers will probably trade him away because they'll be in cap hell and if he can't get that roster a ring then they'll decide they need to find someone that can. I won't be surprised if there's some bonkers thing that happens (they trade Purdy and then sign Rodgers or even Brady comes out of retirement for one year deals, maybe trade Purdy for Stafford with the Rams for a similar "let's go for broke before we gotta change"), and the 49ers will draft a QB to reset the "win by leveraging a cheap rooking contract" plan. I predict that if they don't win Super Bowl this year, Purdy and/or Shanahan will be gone. I'd laugh if they get Belicheck and Brady. Maybe they'd go for Carroll, or try to bring Jim Harbaugh back.

There is absolutely no way you could be the MVP front-runner through 14 games while suffering through a 4-game slump. Popularity contest aside, that's just not possible. There is a lot of chatter that because Purdy doesn't have prototypical NFL tools, he's been the beneficiary of the Kyle Shanahan system and tremendous talent around him. While Patrick Mahomes has a dad bod, absolutely nobody ever accuses Purdy of being an elite athlete. Having said that, Purdy was legit top 5 MVP last season (that does not mean he's a top 5 QB) and IMO labeling him a game manager is unfair. I don't watch many Niners games but look at his 2023 stats:

I don't know how you came up with this idea that they'll pay Purdy just to trade him. The NFL is not the NBA, so any time you pay a QB, you're married to him for at least two seasons. Only the Denver Broncos were dumb enough to violate this rule, and they had to eat an $85M dead cap hit to dump Russell Wilson. Tom Brady is making tons of money on TV without getting hit by 320 pound linemen; unless he has CTE, he's not coming back to play.

It's incredibly hard just to get to a Super Bowl, much less win one. Although the Niners have set themselves up for a chip or bust scenario, that's a problem most teams would die to have. Unless the season becomes a train wreck, I can't imagine they'd let Purdy walk or fire Shanahan. Not to sound ageist, but please double check Belichick and Carroll's ages before you suggest they are a good idea. Harbaugh is occupied in L.A. for the foreseeable future.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell suggested many years ago that because the most valuable asset in the NFL is a stud QB on a rookie contract, some team could ultimately decide to NOT pay its extension-eligible franchise QB. IIRC this was before the Rams paid Jared Goff, so that was the context. To date, I think only the Redskins have let their guy leave (Kirk Cousins) and tried to reset through the draft. How has that worked out for them?

Mason looked great. I mean the OL strength certainly helped but I was really impressed with his running

Does every team have a JonnyDel YT football guru or are we just lucky as Niners fans? I find myself really looking forward to every one of his breakdown videos.
