Pressure does build up until the battery case ruptures releasing gas, smoke, and starting to burn. There was something explosive in those pagers.

One of the reasons they were using pagers is that they'd already been targeted with exploding mobile phone! (Plus pagers are harder to track)Pretty impressive to infiltrate your enemy's supply chain and individual load outs like that.
