Please don't derail this thread.

You guys have the go ahead if you want to make a who's the GOAT CPU? thread. You can add a poll if you like, everyone can brawl it out. 👊 It's been a long while since we had a good versus thread, and it's the perfect topic for one.

Mod DAPUNISHER

That's not all time
Then GOTE it is! Sorry, I had to do it.

I think this sentence is key...

In Apache HTTPD, PyTorch, and various other mostly multi-threaded apps like HPC/scientific computing there was typically up to a few percent better performance.

He notes that, overall, the difference in performance was largely flat, but it does make a measurable difference in CERTAIN multithreaded benchmarks under linux. Since the bios is supposed to address an "issue" with core to core latency, this result passes the smell test. There's not a whole lot out there that is heavily multithreaded AND is ALSO very core to core latency sensitive.

the naming scheme is disastrous
anway, it seems that memory bandwidth is still a bottleneck ...

- 2 channel LPDDR 7500: 120 GB/s
- 4 channel LPDDR 8000: 250 GB/s

Xbox Series S (8 CPU + 20 CU) : 224 GB/s
Xbox Series X (8 CPU + 52 CU): 560 GB/s
Apple M3 Max (16 CPU + 40 CU): 400 GB/s
More like 270GB/s and it has 32MB MALL.
Considering the TDP is going to restrict clocks and the bandwidth overall is fine.

M3 Max with full bandwidth starts at 4000 dollars for 48GB version though
M3 Max with cut-down bandwidth (~300 GB/s) starts at 3500 dollars for 36GB version
I feel like strix halo is not reaching for that. It's somewhere between M3 Pro and Max.
CPU performance will be quite a step above, GPU will be better in video games.
Regardless there is no way AMD will price it that high, you are talking top spec machines with 128GB and big SSDs.
I guarantee a fully enabled Strix Halo with baseline memory capacity will start at $2k, AMD needs to get enough people buying it to make releasing a follow up worthwhile.
A i9+4070m laptop sits around $2k for the most part, and that is the exact type of machine Strix Halo is designed to obliterate.

My question is: Is the BOM for a design with an i9 + 4070 lower or higher than a Strix Halo design? If Strix Halo has a higher BOM they will have a hard time keeping it priced down. If it actually costs less, well, they can do a lot with that.

SC2 therefore remains relevant and loves big L3s

Eh, a 14 year old game that was not that well optimized for more than single core, maybe dual core isn't that relevant. Other than to Blizzard's sloppiness. It is just a matter of can I now run the game at a decent fps with 200+ units on screen or in game as it were on a big game hunters type map with 8 players. That or one of the crazy tower defense maps in custom games.

It certainly isn't going to sell me on a zen5 chip.
