There are many SKUs currently unreleased, Purwa ones particularly it would seem.

All the currently released SKUs except 46 and 42, are Hamoa based.

● X Elite's CPU takes up a much larger portion of the die than M4's CPU does.

Apple spends almost equal amounts of die area for the CPU and GPU. Also the CPU+GPU accounts for a lower percentage of the total die area, which means Apple is spending more area on other components such as Display Engines, Thunderbolt Controllers, Media Engine, etc...

The Oryon CPU appears to be the star of the show in the X Elite, whereas the M4 is a much more balanced SoC design.

I'd be wary of trying to draw too many conclusions from die shot analysis like that. Different CPUs can be organized differently, and depending on how you measure the structures in the die shots, the measurements can vary wildly.

Assuming you're using this source for the X Elite and this source for the M4. The X Elite has some logic (cache controller?) in the middle of the L2 blocks which is included in the area measurement. The M4's L2 is just the cache itself. The M4's cache blocks in the die annotation aren't even touching the cores.

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Chromebook Plus

Price: $699

Seems like an overall great laptop... except for one caveat: the processor. It has an Intel Raptor Lake chip, which is known for it's mediocre efficiency.

Now imagine if this laptop had the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus instead;

The battery life and thermals would improved significantly.

I don't know why, but it seems Qualcomm isn't interested in bringing Snapdragon X to Chromebooks.

Unlike Windows-on-ARM, ChromeOS is well optimised for ARM CPUs, and there will be almost no compatibility issues at all. Also Chromebooks are mostly used for very light workloads such as web browsing, office work, etc... The highly efficient Snapdragon X Plus 8-core would synergise very well with these kinds of workloads.

Qualcomm does sell a number of old SoCs with Chromebook compatibility (and they're all fanless).

It could be pricing: most Chromebooks are under $500; even the nicer ones are well under $1000. The CPUs are usually dirt cheap. I have a growing suspicion that X Elite / X Plus are still rather expensive.

This may go back to some of the alleged PMIC / motherboard costs, as well.

Maybe some unreleased Purwa bins?

Anything with Nvidia will involve astronomical prices, you'll end up thinking snapdragon x is a bargain

Macrium Reflect X is coming and as you might imagine, it's going to be "optimised for X Elite". Anyway, it's good to see official ARM support. I've been using Reflect for image backups for years and it has been fantastic.

Now if Fortinet would add Windows ARM support for their garbage...

It’s still odd to me that these tests aren’t run to max frequency. I mean one set of data at a fixed clock is fine. But not running another set to the max seems weird. And also the FP, we know M4 does 16.11 in a previous run of his to max frequency. So it’s just an odd choice.

Also, shouldn’t the top two graphs be reflective of the bottom chart in their values? The X Elite shows 13.58 points in FP on the bottom but in the chart above it’s roughly scoring 9.

Well, the graph is Intel-oriented, so the results and curves are not fully depicted. Also, the graph shows the motherboard's power consumption, not the core itself (in X Elite, it is impossible to measure the consumption of the core itself). In general, the results are not very encouraging for the X Elite. I now understand why Geekerwan lost interest and didn't release a full-fledged X Elite review. It is very interesting to see how this will be implemented on the 8 Gen 4.

And Intel/AMD needs to follow that direction, because I suspect large L1 caches are also contributing to efficiency in their designs because it keeps lot of data from going out into slower, higher power cache levels and memory.

The basis of Apple's design is also having stellar design team, because being able to have 4GHz clocks at such low power at just 9 pipeline stages and humongous L1 cache with 3 cycle latency is amazing. The E core team can still do quite a bit better, which is catch up with Apple's. It is even more impressive when you consider Mx chips have been stagnating for a while with smart engineers all into "AIeeee" hype and moving to startups.
Oryon V2 is rumoured to hit 5 GHz. Do you think it can be dine without adding more pipeline stages?

Also Apple M5 will be around 5 GHz too, I think (M1 = 3.2, M2 = 3.5, M3 = 4.05, M4 = 4.5).

Integer performance (and performance-per-watt) seems to be weak in Oryon. Improving this should be a top priority for Oryon V2.

But even the bottom graph the results of each aren’t anywhere near max clocks. The X Elite can hit 4.3GHz and yet it’s only being measured at 3.8GHz for both int and fp.

Only reason why I can think of is that it’s showing the peak point of IPC. For example for FP the M4 above scores 15.58 at 3.87GHz for 4.03pts/GHz.. but its max of 16.11 at 4.04GHz is 3.98pts/GHz.

But nonetheless it’s probably best to show the results at max clocks such that overall performance is shown. Or like I said before delineate between different datasets to show max IPC vs performance at max clocks.
