they skipped a step and went to 8 heatpipes. some other tweaks to finstack and an offset option for all previous coolers for amd die centering. it's sad that they have to makes such a twisted convoluted mess of the pipes to accommodate the absurd size of certain brand's graphics cards.

sigh.... a case of MOAR is better...

i think it would of been better to utilize some kind of evap chamber, but i don't know how well those work in a side position.

I'm not 100% convinced this is a more is better heatsink, in as much as it is, there is some tech behind it as well. The upgrading of the fans to push/pull more air through a radiator is what let them increase the density of fins within the heatsink's towers compared to the old version. And with that density increase, it made a lot of sense to see about optimizing the number and location of the heatpipes to better distribute the heat into the denser heatsink.

It really wouldn't surprise me that the new version would be able to handle an additional 30-50W over the old version (possibly even more). Will it be the king of air CPU coolers? I don't know, but it will probably be pretty close, especially for the SPL level. It won't beat water cooling for overall, but it also doesn't run the same risks that a water cooler does, and can probably be setup quieter than a water cooling system (pumps are still louder than optimized fans). And it will be much easier to install and maintain than custom water cooling, so I suspect it will sell well once it is finally on the market next year.

Plus, they announced three SKUs with different finish of the cold plate: low/ standard/ high convexity. Apparently, customers will need to select the right model out of these three which best matches their particular CPU. (I don't know if this was mentioned in the GN video which you linked; haven't watched.)

A showcase of the Pareto principle.

Here is a news outlet with a few press slides from Noctua:

I don't remember if they specifically spelled that out, but they certainly went over the different plates and how they interacted with the difference CPUs, especially the Intel ones as they have found that the retention method that holds the CPU to the motherboard is causing the integrated heat spreader to warp/bend on most of the Intel CPUs, creating a concave dip in the center of the chip (almost like a mini-halfpipe), and that over time it gets a little worse. The AMD CPUs do not suffer nearly as bad a deflection as they have an even thicker heatspreader this generation compared to last and that has added a lot more rigidity.

they covered the concavity issue with Jakob Dellinger from noctua in the video. GN had already been looking into the mating effect of the IHS from intel vs amd and have an earlier video where they worked with scythe to test the effect of matching the surfaces. the scans visualize the actual severity of the concavity.

can the new NF-A14x25r G2 fans (round version) currently available be used as case fans or is that only meant to be used on CPU coolers like the NH-D15?...do I need to wait for the square version coming in September?

According to Noctua's site the NF-A14x25r G2 fans can be used in cases but I don't think that it's that simple. If it was then why launch a square version, right? A few days ago I got an NF-A14 just to be on the safe side. I would wait if I were you.

the NF-A14 is what I normally use for my 140mm case fans but I hear good things about this new fan...you're right as far as why would Noctua release a square one next month if they both were the same in terms of functionality

anyone have any confirmation on whether these round versions can be used the same as the NF-A14 as far as case fans?

They most certainly can but judging from their unique shape compatibility with all cases is not guaranteed. These fans are so new that only early adapters of the NH-D15 G2 can test them as case fans but it still comes down to your case. My take is that if your case is kinda roomy and you use any of Noctua’s anti-vibration stuff like the NA-SAV2, which will lift them a couple of mm you’ll probably be fine. Have in mind that these fans are mounted using the same holes like the 120mm fans.

AFAICT their overall dimensions fall within those of a typical 140mm fan.

I'm using the Fractal Design Torrent case...so these new fans use the 120mm holes in the case and not 140mm?

I think it's probably safer to just get the NF-A14 fans...those are still excellent overall 140mm fans and it's also cheaper

This is what I did. Can't go wrong with that but if you still want those little improvements the new fans offer you can wait. At the very least when they come out the NF-A14 may get a bit cheaper.

I e-mailed Noctua and this is the response I got:

Thank you very much for contacting us.

The only difference between the round framed fans and the square framed version is the mounting, when case airflow is concerned. As long as your case has 120mm as well as 140mm case fan slots there will be no difference in performance between the square and round frame versions.

The real difference is when using the fans on a watercooling radiator as the round frame will not cover the whole of the radiator air can escape where the corners of the frame would be for the square frame version. With the square frame version air cannot escape between fan and radiator which will lead to better cooling performance.

Aesthetically you might want to wait for the square frame version which is currently scheduled to be released in September.
