According to Wendell, there were veteran engineers at Intel expressing concern and warnings about what was going on, but they were ignored by management until everything started to blow up publicly.
I was cooking while listening. Was that speculatory on his part, or info from contacts? The whole heed the greybeards thing struck me as odd given many are taking the early retirement buyouts. Only thing they will hear is a parting shot of I told you so.

When Arrow Lake launches, they can bench it against "nu Raptor Lake" and show bigger gains than against launch Raptor Lake. You know, the performance it was meant to exhibit for its lifespan?
People buying a new system aren’t cross shopping Raptor Lake. If AMD didn’t exist and have a dominant position in DIY and if the new microcode nerfed performance by a large amount it could be a plausible conspiracy but that’s not the case.

LOL that greybeards line made me laugh so hard. Why in the world would upper-middle management care what people not on their principal engineer promotion spreadsheet have to say when they are busy battling for supremacy on the lights out Titanic.

People buying a new system aren’t cross shopping Raptor Lake.

Sure they are, or at least they would be if Raptor Lake didn't have a rep for needing multiple UEFI updates and power plans not to commit suicide. Normally people who are shopping around look at new and previous gen parts, do a comparison, and ask themselves whether they need/want the bleeding edge for the next 2-4+ years (however long they intend to run the system). If Raptor Lake hadn't gone through so much agony, they might see a new part from Intel getting +x% over Raptor Lake in ST and +xx% in MT and think "huh, that's not worth the early adopter tax, I'll just get a discounted Raptor Lake system instead" (or they might buy an old Zen4, but there are plenty of people out there with blinders on for one brand or another). Now that Raptor Lake is patched to run at lower voltages and clocks, any review that features a current Raptor Lake system versus Arrow Lake is gonna make Arrow Lake look quite a bit better. Any review that uses old launch Raptor Lake numbers will show a different comparison.

I don't see how this works with AMD CPUs being the main comparison point. AMD also got the perf boost recently, which will hurt RPL even more.

People seeing the 14900K presumably struggling against Zen 4 would start asking themselves some uncomfortable questions.

See above, but also keep in mind that Intel is going to show gen-over-gen slides for Arrow Lake against their own hardware.

I think Intel will play it safe and compare against Alder Lake instead. There's multiple reasons why this works better for them, including addressing the bigger segment in search of an upgrade (10th-12th gen) and making sure the press doesn't needlessly mention Raptor Lake failures on ARL reveal day.

IMHO the main reason Intel needed to call the issue fixed before ARL launch was to make sure reviewers mention it on review day: "Intel had Raptor Lake issues, now they're fixed". These reviews tend to have wider reach and they stay relevant for longer, it's important they don't speak about "ongoing" stability issues.

What is this whitewashing bs? Reddit, forums, and youtube are filled with raptor owners horrible experiences with Intel RMA service, including rejections. That is, once they knew the CPU was broken and the source of their problems. Before that it was months and months of crickets chirping while Intel let game devs and gpu vendors take the heat for games crashing. Throwing the board makers under the bus. Selling CPUs in 2024 they knew had via oxidation in 2022.

LOL no at owners get back a newer better CPU. So many have had to RMA 2,3, or more times. Perhaps this latest update ends processor progeria, only time will tell if that's the case. Meanwhile, it's at best a hassle jumping through hoops to get a CPU replaced. Or if offered a refund because they are fresh out of those "newer better CPUs", (what's newer and better if you RMA a 14900K?) deciding where to go from there. Get stuck selling the board? Reward Intel for being anti consumer and screwing you over by buying another? Change platforms as many are doing?

But hey, it won't burn the house down so it's all good right?
Well that is, a lot.

It was clear to me early on from the high power draw that Intel was pushing their chips harder and harder leaving less and less headroom so we went AMD and couldn't be happier.

I'm not inclined to get all worked up about Intel's problems. Sure many people have been inconvenienced and some are out a good deal of time and/or money, some may have lost data, etc. but no one is hurt. Boeing killing hundreds of people with MCAS worries me a great deal more. Firestone making bad tires worried me. Deadly hurricanes near loved ones worry me.

Even if we had an affected Intel CPU it would at most be inconvenient which is nothing compared to my family's safety. It isn't even close. Computers have been a handful to deal with from day one with software bugs, bad drivers, bad RAM, Hard drives losing data, updates crashing your system, etc. etc. That CPUs have historically been so reliable has been a blessing.

If this Intel business is the worst thing you have to worry about you are having a great day. 1st world problems.

You are approaching the wrong dude; homie don't play that. It's nothing but whitewashing and it won't work, give it up. Intel has engage in extremely anti consumer practices, lied, denied, tried to be sly. Stockholm Syndrome is no way to live life.

EDIT: BTW, there is a hurricane that multiple models have the eyewall passing right over my neighborhood, barreling towards me at the moment. So don't talk to me about first world problems. I could be homeless Wednesday. ☠️ Yet I still am not inclined to buy Intel's snakeoil used car salesperson 💩

There is nothing to "give up". I'm not trying to sell you on Intel which should have been clear from my opening statement about being on AMD. I'm suggesting that you are overly upset about this problem. Yes it is a problem, yes it is upsetting but you have been on a rant for weeks about the same issue.

Think about how long it took to get the airbag mess straightened out. Sure there was a recall but there was not enough new airbags to replace all the recalled ones and that was an actual safety issue. Ain't no one going to die over this Intel Vmin business unless you give yourself a heart attack over it.

FIrst, please stop with the hyperbole. The false attribution about my level of emotions is silly. I have spent almost my whole life in combat sports, this is hardly enough to get my blood pressure up. 🤣

So that you have a very specific example of why I respond as I do: Rollo, the infamous Nvidia focus group shill that plagued our forums once upon a time, often employed that exact tactic . It is intended to make those calling attention to the vendor's shenanigans appear to be not only overreacting, but as an indictment of their character for bringing the vendor to task for their BS.

I am not implying anything about you in particular. I accept you are most probably being completely genuine, but understand, you are typing things that I have seen going back more than 20yrs. The "I own and use the competition's hardware so I can't be a shill" schtick was his bread and butter. I very publicly, in our GPU forum here, traded him my Nvidia 5800 Ultra for his ATI 9800 Pro. He only had it to gaslight others. I had roasted the 5800U hair dryer thoroughly here, and he proceeded to present it as far better than it was once he received it in our trade. Meanwhile the 9800 pro was miles better than that POS for me, while gratefully being quiet.

I hope this helps you understand why when vendors engage in anti consumer tactics I put on the warpaint. I will ALWAYS side with my fellow consumers and not the faceless corpos victimizing us for profit. How they used people like Rollo reminds me of this cartoon -

They set us against each other, and it costs what amounts to peanuts for them. I just want 5 minutes in the cage with them...

Conclusion: I am old, salty, and everything old is new again.

I was in high school, working part time. I had to save up a lot to get a 9800 Pro. It was fantastic though. I had upgraded from a Geforce 3 Ti 200, which was great as well. The FX series was garbage, especially in DirectX 9. Half Life 2 proved that. I kind of miss the days of solid ATi/AMD GPU's.

Looks like you got your wish and I was off-base. Watch out for the "PAR" overload

Imagine having the 14900KS and realizing you still technically have a top performing gaming CPU for the next few years, if only it gets past shader compilation

Damn, Alder Lake would have been funnier. So just for clarification, are these Raptor Lake numbers before or after the firmware updates?

I have no clue, it's better we wait for the proper reveal. We'll get all the slides and the footnotes. If I had to guess though, RPL should be running latest firmware.

Yeah early benches are cool and all but more info is always better.

Apparently, the BIOS fix + Intel settings works.

I think there is a little more to this. There is no such thing as "Default" settings. If they set the power limit to the very low power limit (153W ?) they reduced the performance of their computers below their advertised performance.

If the CPUs were crashing consistently, they may already have accrued some silicon degradation, which is irreversible, and it may start to manifest itself again even at lower power settings.

Yeah you're probably right. But in the case mentioned in that video, they probably won't notice the system running with lower power limits, and it'll be a long time (if ever) before that degradation makes a difference.
