I saw Finntroll, Korpiklaani, and Ensiferum in a fairly small venue (maybe a few hundred people?), that was ALSO an excellent show. Ensiferum had a bucket at their table labeled "vodka fund", I had to throw a few bucks in there. It's taken me a while, but I'm kind of on your brother's path, right now I can play guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, bouzouki, and this year I've started piano and accordion (and I sing). Still want to add hurdy-gurdy in there, maybe in the next year or two.I used to always make fun of accordions when I was a kid. Then I heard Finntroll's masterpiece Midnattens Widunder around 2000ish.
I cant play any instruments at all. Took piano lessens for like 3 or 4 years as a kid, never got past very very basic stuff.
My brother is the opposite. He had like 1 or 2 lessons on guitar when he was 5 and now he plays every instrument.

Yeah, they are in my mind the foremost exponents. I have a DVD of them performing live. If you like them I think you'd like Fishtank Ensemble.There's a decent sized overlap between gypsy punk and folk punk audiences too. I saw Gogol Bordello live a few years back, amazing show.
