There are rumors that Snap 8 Gen Elite would use Oryon cores and be expensive while there would be a cheaper Snap 8 Gen 4 using stock Arm Cores and effectively replace the 8GxS.
I am not certain. The rumour mill is foggy.

It's strange that he already has a device with a new chip. It must have been made again for a review by Geekerwan.

Doubtful. But Geekerwan did sponsor Kurnal's X Elite die shot. That die shot is supposed to debut in Geekerwan'a X Elite analysis video. That video is said to drop after their Lunar Lake analysis video, so I am expecting it this month.

I am still more concerned about battery life, software support period and price.

Most current phones with top tier SoCs feel fast enough. If it doesn't come at the cost of any of those other factors then I have no qualms. But it looks like peak power draw keeps going up* and rumors say the price goes up for both. I wonder if 2025 high end phones will pass that price increase on to consumers.

* (though that shouldn't matter too much, since phones are often at near idle)

X Elite hits 15000 points in Geekbench 6 and needs 80W to do so.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. 8 Gen 4 hits 10000 points in Geekbench 6.

X Elite hits 15000 points in Geekbench 6 and needs 80W to do so.

Honestly who cares what the MT power is for the most part at peak. Just show me the individual core curves on a phone especially.

“20W” is basically clickbait in this case, most likely the thing will still be pretty efficient relative to the 8 Gen 3 iso-performance in the real world.

If it does consume 20W then that’s an easy chart topper. The M3 consumed around 20-25W lol.

Even the MTK 9400 pulls 18.4W to get max performance (caveat at 10pct less perf it draws 50pct less power).
As a comparison of the 9400 to the A18 Pro, the A18P consumes around 12-13W at max performance. 33% less power draw and performs similarly in MT.

I’m just saying you won’t get to 20W mobo only on a phone anyway in 99.5% of circumstances and we want to see a full curve.

@gdansk, in regard to performance in top tier SOCs already being fast enough;

With a caveat in camera. I tried Pixel 9 Pro, and HDR is slow. Not sure if this is normal for all Pixels. Also 4k@60 is not perfectly smooth still. Not sure if this benefits from general SOC performance, or ISP exclusively.

And terribly made websites with atrocious ads and javascript, which is most big news portals where I am. It's sometimes choppy, even on flagships.

It seems that most (not all, but a lot) of advancements in SOCs are used as excuses to write poorer code and jam heavier ads, because there is less pressure to optimize it for most consumers, especially since most ads target rich countries where most phones sold are top tier.

Interesting details on upcoming flagship SoC layouts:


The area of Dimensity 9400 is within 135? That’s too conservative, around 125! The overall layout is still the 9300 style. The high-frequency memory benefits from the new memory particles. A brand new power strategy has also been added? I also took a good look at 8g4. The GPU scale remains unchanged, but a large number of L2s have been added. With n3e and high-frequency memory, there can be an improvement of about 30. In the middle is 8g4, which only frames a single core without shared L2. It looks small, but it has a full performance library. At the same time, the daily experience of 6 large cores in a cluster will not be affected. The area of the two chips is also close. Qualcomm’s CPU peak will be very high, and the GPU is considered to be a regular 30% improvement. Dimensity is very balanced, and a large number of details use mixed libraries.

They’ve been shilling pretty hard lately for Samsung tbh. And iirc, same with Qualcomm saying that the S8G4 beats the A18 Pro in every single metric, which clearly it doesn’t in single core.

Honestly, though I hope they are right about the power draw. But based on the X Elite power figures; it seems possible that it will still consume a decent amount of power.

I'd wait for the retail units here before jumping to a conclusion. That the SoC can pull an unthrottled 20W might be more of a hint that it could also be implemented in much less thermal constrained laptop implementations...

Surely, that's a typo? It can't be including the L2.

I measured the M4's P-core to be about 3 mm² (without L2), so 2.9 mm² sounds about right for the A18's P-core. They both have the same P-core, but the one in A18 uses denser libraries, hence why it clocks lower, and is a tad smaller in size.

You are correct. I meant to put the "(2MB of L2)" beside the 9400. I have edited the post.
