Is the CPU temp sensor issue fixed in BIOS version 1.6b or 1.9?
If you mean Tctl/Tdie with high offset, then the answer is no, and AMD will probably leave it this way, requiring software to be adapted to it, instead.
I've had 1.6b and now on 1.9.
Which software you use with the high value shown?

Has anyone compared any of these Genoa cpu to the new Threadripper pro? Debating if I should get a "cheap" ebay Epyc vs Threadripper

@Markfw, @vityan666 and other Genoa trailblazers --

1) What torque screwdriver did you use to install your coolers? (The SP5 torquing spec per the Supermicro manual appears to be different than SP3, etc).

2) What thermal paste are you using?

I use the same torque wrench as sp3.is the sp5 more?
And the paste that comes with the hsf works for me

  1. I too built one or another SP3 computer before, but with tray EPYCs rather than a boxed Threadripper. Therefore I don't have AMD's gratis torque wrench in my possession but got a generic one. It's an adjustable torque wrench, and its range covers both SP3's and SP5's recommended mounting torque.

  2. I don't remember anymore if the waterblock which I used came with pre-applied TIM. If yes, I used that. If no, I used Noctua NT-H1. Not because it is particularly good (it is not among the best thermal pastes) but because I am familiar with its consistency and because I have a stash of it.

Actually, the SP5 torque is less. Per the H12SSL-NT (SP3) manual, the required torque is 14 lbf-in (I think it's actually 14 +/- 1). Per the H13SSL-NT (SP5) manual, the required torque is 10.8 - 13.0 lbf-in. It appears the orange TR tool is set to 13.3 lbf-in. So in theory, using the orange TR tool, one could easily overtorque the screws on an SP5 install.

What is the SP3 and SP5 torque specs ? I need to know this, I have never seen it.

Supermicro H11DSi manual: 16.1 kgf-cm (14.0 lbf-in) — that's for the three SP3 force frame screws
Supermicro H13SSL manual: 12.5~15.0 kgf-cm (10.85~13.01 lbf-in) — that's for the single SP5 force frame screw

Thanks ! I don't think 16.1 is that far over 15, so I am sure I am fine. Used it on 5 Genoa boxes so far.

Do you happen to know the model of torque wrench you have? I'm beginning to learn about these and they are very confusing. And unless you have some sort of torque checking device or calibration certificate, its hard to know if they are accurately calibrated.

It's a German make, I could look it up later today. The maker calibrated it; I certainly don't have the means nor the need to calibrate it myself.

Don't overthink this; you can tighten the force frame screw by hand as well, IMO.

Using a calibrated torque wrench is overkill in this context. Keep in mind that the tensile force of a screw or bolt depends not only on the mounting torque but also on the lubrication and thread quality. There is no lubrication mandated for the little screws used in computer assembly, including that of the force frame, so there you go.

From what I understand, the force frame has two functions: Preventing the CPU package from lateral movements in the socket, creating some pressure between package and the LGA contact springs of the socket. For both of these purposes, the forces acting between force frame and package and socket can certainly have some tolerances. On top of that goes the cooler, which is mounted with mechanisms which vary from vendor to vendor: Spring loaded screws in a stiff frame; torque-mounted screws in a stiff frame; stiff screws in a frame with specific flexibility. The resulting pressure of the cooler onto the package first and foremost serves the purpose of making for a good thermal contact between heat spreader and cold plate. But I presume it additionally adds to the pressure between CPU package and LGA contacts. So for the latter, there seems to be redundancy, making it less dependent on the particular force exerted by the (in case of SP5: single) screw of the force frame.

Proxxon MicroClick torque screwdriver MC 2. For 0.4 to 2Nm. (That's 4…20 kg·cm adjustable torque.)
But this sort of tool really is overkill if you don't have any other use for it. The gratis torque driver which came with boxed Threadrippers may be on offer at online auction sites for a good price; I haven't looked.

This solution is not as good as Stefans, but it suits me well. The long adapter is for the huge heatsink. Its taped onto a stock threadripper wrench with the stock T20 adapter removed.
