I'm surprised I'm the first to post this but Musk's RoboTaxi event didn't go according to plan but did go exactly how most of humanity knew it would; short on details, long on promises, all with an over-optimistic timeline. Oh, and Tesla shares are down almost 9% right now.

Questions are being asked about Mr Musk's prediction that production of the Cybercab would begin some time "before 2027", given his track record of failing to meet his own deadlines.

"I tend to be optimistic with time frames," he quipped during the event.

"The Cybercab demos were conducted on a movie set in a well-controlled environment, and were very similar to a slow and short amusement park ride. Waymo is now hosting 100k rides per week in major cities, so we expect more from TSLA's demo," Wells Fargo analyst Colin Langan said.

His slew of announcements during a 20-minute presentation were short on practical details and prompted investors to push Tesla stock down as much as 10% on Friday.
Musk has a concept of a plan to get the Cybercab ready for mass production.

The New York City Taxi Commision, which used to be run by Repubs, and now run by Dems, would love to see their taxi drivers replaced by AI. /s

At one point today Uber and Lyft were both up 10%, I assume because people though this was such a joke.

At least they are being open about why they are rejecting the increase in launches.

State officials cited Musk’s antics in rejecting SpaceX’s plan to launch more rockets off the Central California coast.

“I really appreciate the work of the Space Force,” said Commission Chair Caryl Hart. “But here we’re dealing with a company, the head of which has aggressively injected himself into the presidential race and he’s managed a company in a way that was just described by Commissioner Newsom that I find to be very disturbing.”
You skipped the part where they were going to claim military exceptions for permits on all launches, regardless of if it was a military mission or not.

If it would mean not having to deal with surly NYC cab drivers who get upset or refuse to take you to places in the city, I'd take that replacement. I remember from my years living in and around NYC several rides from LGA to Astoria with a cab driver complaining about the short airport trip (despite short trips meaning they could get right back into that lucrative taxi queue), or other drivers pulling over upon being flagged, asking where you were going, then driving off because they didn't want to go there (a violation of TLC rules).

Uber is an evil company but I was perfectly happy to see them destroy the NYC taxi business.

Meanwhile, Elon says he became a fascist because Biden wouldn’t invite him to any events and parties.

Turns out the “robots” were being remotely operated.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Leons “fully self-driving” cars are just being run by a guy in India with a remote driving rig.

I’m not sure what’s more ridiculous - these “cabs” or the idea that public school districts have the money to spend on them. Musk basically spent all this time, money and hype just to come up with an inferior alternative to school buses. Apparently he suggested these things could be used as school buses.

I can’t see any potential problems with replacing a bus that can hold 60-80 kids each with vehicles that only hold 12. and then putting 12 tech-savvy children into a self-driving pod with no adult supervision. I guess 12 per bus keeps the death rate at a more acceptable number? My kids are adults now, but no way would I let my kids be transported in a vehicle without adult supervision.

It’s ok the kids will be watched over by AI powered cameras.

The Elmo narrative is getting weird ...

He is shooting for a shadow presidency with himself in charge and is currently building "Elon Cities" in Texas ... The Fuck?

And with no windows and probably no emergency stop button. What could go wrong?

Biden doesn't invite him to a pro-union event: "they are the devil, fuck all Dems."

Trump promises to end all electric cars: "I love this guy and will spend millions to get him elected."

This is a problem in general for the US, Democrats have to be perfect, Republicans don't have to be anything.

Trump recently reversed himself and said out loud it's because Elon gives him a lot of money.

The reveal was mostly just a circus and a show. Pure marketing fluff. Unreal. Stock went down 9% after, so a lot of people saw through it, but honestly, that couldn't is so fucking overvalued by nothing of substance. Four direct reports to Elon quit in the days running up to this event.

Probably because they were embarrassed of the dog and pony show about to happen.

Elon Musk is a man-child. It’s no surprise he comes up with half-baked ideas like this. Any rational adult could easily find flaws in them. He could really use some adult supervision himself.

Tesla's valuation aside, the oligarchs paper net worth is predicated on a status quo in the income tax regime. It's easy to see why Elon would love a lifelong tax cheat to be POTUS. That represents the least overall "threat" to his finances.

He is far more affected by impacts to Tesla than tax code changes.
