So they literally renamed Genoa CPUs?
Wait, wait, what I am lost? VIA gave up and uses now AMD designs?

And how about Intel giving their Core -n designs configuration to small companies like DM&P Electronics (they are taiwanese)

Hmm that's interesting. It's definitely leaning on multicore performance though. ST is still rather poor. It beats the i3-8100 in a few scenarios so um great, I guess? The power usage in R23 is pretty bad though. Perf/watt = fail.

It's a hard sell to any PC user who can buy an Intel, AMD, or even now Qualcomm processor.
And I'm not sure a target market really exists. It seems the primary customer decided on some home-grown ARM and RISC-V CPUs going forward.

P.S. ~32% Skymont (KX-8000) IPC uplift over Gracemont (KX-7000), is still a mighty impressive generational gain. This 30% IPC uplift of the KX-8000 will by play a crucial role in ensuring that the processor ends up posting generational gains in multithreaded productivity performance.

China might be making great strides but it all based off of US technology. And without access to the best fabs I don't see them succeeding espically when they can't clock nearly as high. Seems more like a novelty item for now.

What do you think that it's holding them back from in the desktop and mobike market? Computers have been "good enough" for almost a decade now. Save for playable framerates in ultra on precious few games, there's nothing that the above performance numbers really prevent you from doing.

For big AI, they are perfectly willing to multi-pattern till the cows come home to get their targeted performance numbers. No, its not perfect, but it is sufficient.

So gaming is all we do with high end computers? Besides, if it's good enough, let the market decide by price. Good enough could be an 8700k. Maybe even less.

They can compensate with better IPC, but it will have a limit for that.

High performance workstation usage of "prosumer" level PCs is such a vanishingly small market. Every year it seems that I'm retiring a dedicated workstation from several years ago for a run of the mill "performance desktop" with an i7 class processor that does just as well for a fraction of the cost for what remains local compute. More and more drifts up to the cloud...

Perf/watt, VIA/Zhaoxin has always used too much power with their CPUs/SoCs.
Which is fine for desktop, or so we've been told over the years. They are still a bit behind on mobile for anything beyond basic web browsing and office apps.

Depends on the desktop. If you're trying to sell chips in rinky dink OEM desktops with bad power supplies and corner-cutting on the cooling, then having the lower power chip is a huge boon. If it's DiY then yeah it wouldn't matter.

CPU-Z is very simple codebase (not as bad as Coremark or Dhrystone, but too "nice and easy" to be used for benchmarking). It's possible it is overstimating the IPC of some cores compared to what performance they could extract with their out of order core running more typical messy code that needs good branch prediction, prefetching and overall real-world performance to not fall apart. (Skymont has decent branch prediction perhaps better than Lion Cove, but I wonder if CPU-Z could overstate its ability to use all its execution units a bit too much.)

Using single-thread geekbench for these comparisons may actually be better idea, despite all the issues the software has (like variance, MT score being worse then useless since it is outright misleading).
